Where are the places to be and not to be? Saw that it starts on the 13th and should end on the 15th. But were should I go to see 1. The worst drunken parties and water dousing 2. See official festivities (sorry) And.. is there anyplace where a farang usualluy visits I should avoid since it is especially rowdy or "wet".

Go to Pattaya to see the worst drunken parties and water dousing. Avoid Pattaya as it is especially rowdy and "wet". It normally ends in Pattaya on the 19th.

An excellent answer EPC to a question that appears to be 'mutually exclusive'...

divinebal, I don't think you should be left with the impression that there are especially wet places at Songkran If you step outside your door between the 13th. and the 15th, here, you are going to get a thorough dousing wherever you are in Thailand. Be prepared to be soaked all day. wherever you go. Most places calm down between 6 and 8 p.m. but other than that, it's total waterfall experience. You may know this already, but I suspected from your post that you haven't been in Thailand at this time of the year before.

Caught the first day 2 years ago in Phuket so I know how "wet" it can get. But when you have a holiday where there is some "extended" targeting of us farangs I can only assume that when you have drunken brits|russians|swedes that perhaps might not share the joy there could be some... "problems". I don't know? But from what I know of our partying these moments can easily get out of hands. It is that kind of.. "place" I would like to avoid :D

No Need to go to Pattaya. Bangkok is full of drunken parties and Water Dousing. Any P4P areas + Khao San Road will do fine.

That's why on my next trip, I intend to leave well before Songkran. I've had enough of that crap the last few times.

"Sawat dee bee mai, khap" I'll be back again for Songkran this year and will take up station again outside the barber shop near the in-laws house and probably be the only farang around (Bang Phli, BKK southern suburbs). It makes me a target but it's all good natured. The Thais play by the rules - mostly - and if you have food, good clothes on, are carrying a baby or clearly are not playing - then you can walk thru the chaos unmolested. Not so in the farang or tourist areas. Late afternoon sees a lull as everybody hits the market stalls for food - then it starts again for a couple of hours with a total ceasefire just after dark. Not so in the tourist areas. Enjoy.

Used to like it, but not so much these days. Last Songkran got pickpocketed down one of the Soi Patpong's - it was hell - a mass of horrible, drunk moving bodies. I was amazed that no-one ever gets trampled to death in that part - like a Hillsborough (for those that no anything about UK football tragedies). Up North (Udon Province) is best in my opionion - not as many Farangs, although you will get targeted if you are a Farang, but certainly no nasty elements and more family orientated.
