Anyone else seen the farang guy sitting in the street with his suitcase and a hand-written CV, asking for an 'expat-style job'? He's been around for a couple of months at least - first saw him around Patpong being stared at by Thais, now he hangs around Asok being ignored. I would have thought that sitting in the street like that was the worst way to get a job - go to a bar at least, network. And have felt like telling him, but I'm guessing he is suffering from more problems than a pep talk from me could solve. Anyone know his story, or tried to help?

He's still there? The job market must have dried up for homeless bums, requesting executive jobs, while sitting in the street. Not sure what he calls himself. I call him 'beggar'. Maybe someone could strike up a conversation, to see what the con is all about?

I walk past him often on the way home from work I almost started to read the letter when it turned into a scribbled CV, but avoided it and continued on down the street, but there was a Thai guy I almost walked right into who had stopped to read it I doubt he has the money to sit in a bar networking, not that networking in bars has served up a lot of Expat jobs, he's looking for work in the Middle East from what I first read in the early stages of his job search

I never saw the guy... but can say from experience that I managed an "expat-styled" job via proper networking that turned into an even better job via connections I made in that job... if he doesnt have credentials and is sitting on the streets then obviously he hasnt got a shot in hell.. Its called hitting the bricks with a decent CV and determination..that is what I relied on.. They were not expat paying jobs but paid pretty damn well (80K a month +) for a farang that had been a teacher... they can be had.. but one must not take "no" for an answer and keep at it...but you must be presentable and bring something to the table in order to gain a work visa... atl **edit in** I remember going for a job interview at the Marriott across the river..same side as Penninsula and being told they didnt want to hire a farang as "sales manager." I showed up at the big bosses office the next day in full suit and fruit for the entire office...he had me in and pretty much said my CV met with expectations and I seemed like a qualified guy but they were looking for a Thai person...he then wrote down a number I should call that turned out to be the the guy who got me my real estate job.... Its all about about how you work it....

I am guessing, but I would suppose that back in those days the market wasn't as flooded with Falahng looking to get a job and the availability of Thais with the proper training and credentials were also limited nowadays the clients will sometimes specify that a Thai person can do the job where they would previously have said Expat It's also getting tougher to get a work permit along with employers realizing that they don't have to pay extra high wages to keep an expat my guess is that guy on the street has already tried networking in bars and these same sort of things ATL mentions and is at his wit's end I've had plenty of "networking in bars" that led to nothing, examples : client didn't specify an Expat, Thai got the job, this is after the interview and a nice waste of time client said they were over quota for expats, this is after about 6 weeks of following up thru my connections and finally contacting the guys on site directly client wasn't willing to pay more than 1,200 USD/month the contact wanted to hire me, HR disagreed one in particular was always saying he was gonna hire soon, I finally got tired of calling the guy to hear the same cock & bull story about how HR were changing the format of the contracts or that they were waiting to win a new project, etc. etc. one said they nationalized in the jobs they had me slotted for, after he had already checked my references and really had me thinkin' he had something for me the list goes on and on, so if you can find a niché great, otherwise it's a dog-eat-dog World out there

Do remember that it is not very easy to hire a farang into your company. There is a rule, where you need a ratio of 4 Thais to 1 farang, and in addition to that you will need to increase your paid up capital by another 2 million baht for every farang you intend to hire. With all these hassles in mind, it is simply not favorable to hire a farang unless you are absolutely certain that only he can get the job done and nobody else can.

yeah, I've worked for companies that maxed out on work permits and had guys working w/o one, because their capital assets were not enough to acquire another W/P, not good for the Expat if he's caught

I have seen a few jobs in the Tech area specifying Expat only but for the most part any work I do in LOS is outsourced to me. Basically I come in, spend a week or two assessing the business needs and developing a specification, then go home and do the work remotely in Singapore. The only other times I am in LOS are for progress meetings and final testing. Not that I would mind doing the work on-site but that will not happen with current work rules...
