http://bangkokpost.com/News/13Apr2008_news03.php Australian arrested with stash of hash Doctors remove drug from stomach By Supapong Chaolan An Australian tourist who was rushed to hospital with acute stomach ache was arrested after a doctor found 65 packages containing drugs worth more than one million baht in his stomach. The provincial hospital alerted police late on Friday night when an X-ray of John Paul Jones, 51, revealed suspicious objects, shaped like a string of sausages, in his intestine. The objects were later extracted and identified as 800 grammes of hashish. Worapob Sutiwatanaruput, the doctor supervising the case, said Mr Jones experienced severe stomach pain after staying on the tourist island of Samui for five days and was taken to hospital. ''Before the operation, Mr Jones looked nervous and asked whether police would be notified. We found 62 black objects obstructing his small intestine. Three packs had burst,'' Dr Worapob said. The hash was wrapped in condoms and each pack was about two inches long. The operation to extract the packages took two hours and Mr Jones remained in critical condition yesterday, the doctor said. Police said the hash, regarded as a category 5 drug, was not produced in Thailand. The drug was likely to have been made in India or Pakistan and is popular among tourists who take part in the full moon parties on Koh Phangan, an island close to Samui. It is sold at 1,500-2,000 baht a gramme. Police said Mr Jones would be charged and detained for interrogation. Provincial governor Vinai Buapradit suspected Mr Jones swallowed the drugs when he was overseas so he could pass through drug detectors and sniffer dogs at airports and at the pier on Samui where boats leave for Koh Phangan. Pinyo Thongchai, the deputy chief of the Department of Special Investigation, said trans-national criminal groups were rampant on Koh Samui. As well as the Bandidos motorcycle gang, which recently faced a crackdown by authorities, there were also international mafia gangs doing illegal businesses in drugs, land and property deals and extorting money from foreign businessmen. In June last year police on Koh Samui arrested Frenchman Pittet Pasca Maorica, 53, who was also admitted to Samui International Hospital after suffering from stomach pain. Doctors found one kilogramme of heroin in his stomach.

Not really - the other guy that got caught doing something similar was French. So, since these guys all get caught in Thailand, I figured that's the common thread. I guess stupidity is an equal opportunity employer.

the stupidity is with the govenments for making the stuff illegal we can thank the USA and UK for that piece of visionary expertise. If they just would stop this stupidity then things like this would not happen. He should have used stronger or double condoms, and doctors are supposed to treat people without calling the police so they are as ethical as my cock.

Stupid argument - you legalize one thing, and the dumb people will find another way and another product to endanger themselves with. Mind you, I'm all in favor of letting Darwin take care of trimming the herd, since in these kind of crimes only the dumb vote themselves off the island - but short of legalizing everything, that's not going to happen. Besides, drugs are a much bigger problem in Asia than they are in the US, so I can see why the laws are as they are.

That's rich. You are assuming you are dealing with someone with intelligence and common sense? He should have used latex balloons, or welded vinyl bags.

You may not like it but it is really the only option in the long run, or let criminals corner the market for all drugs except alcohol now that is stupid

Painting with a broad brush aren't we what have you based that on. Each country is different in Thailand they have the so called Yaba problem, mostly poor people using poor drugs selling being the only way to make money. Then getting caught and being unproportionally punished. Does it work, for a while murder a few thousand people and a few years later the problem is still there.

Ethics patients trust with a doctor, cannabis is just a product like any other. A lot of us like to drink but that gives nobody a right to tell us we cant.. So the actions of governments make everything harder and a bigger problem than it ever was. Why not make alcohol illegal then and give the crims the whole market. In reality there is no choice than legalisation one day they will get balls, personally idontgiveafuk is freely available in the normal world so

Actually, I'm all in favor of it - I don't see any need to touch the stuff, but I am a strong believer in Darwinian elimination. Legalizing it would just speed the process up, *AND* (as you pointed out) eliminate the whole organized crime problem overnight (at least when it comes to drugs). One problem - if things were to be legalized, and organized crime suddenly lost all that revenue, where do you think they would turn to, to make up for that shortfall? They aren't going to go away, either, and they certainly will want to continue making their kinds of money. Would legalizing drugs eliminate one crime family, and simply shift crime and violence to another? Lastly, all that being said, I also do believe in respecting certain laws of a country, particularly the ones that get you tossed into an unpleasant jail for violating them - subsequently, people getting caught smuggling drugs, particularly in Asia, simply continue the game of Darwinian elimination. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I presume Daffy by your use of the term "darwinian elimination" you mean natural selection. I honestly don't know if you are joking or just putting up a Neanderthal front. I don't know your personal circumstances nor your age so please forgive me, if I assume incorrectly that you have no childen. But..................... if at some time you have a little teenage female duckling and you allow her to go to a party and there she is hooked onto a drug by some low-life and unbeknownst to you, in hiding her addiction begins to feed her habit by putting out to all and sundry, singles or in groups, for every time she wants to score, and eventualy succumbs to the addiction and over-doses and dies in the process, maybe you wont be such "a strong believer" in such a view. For what you have neglected in your comfortable stance to cover all, is the recognition that there are those in our society who are extremely vulnerable and are not yet in positions of culpability and who need to be protected. You may have heard that it is a mark of civilisation to afford this care for those not as strong nor as mature as yourself. I do agree with you that scum should be somehow got rid of. But let's not forget that your tenant of belief if applied generally equates you with the first barbarian act. It's just not that simple. Thanks for sharing your thoughts...but............... Let's hope you give it some more thought.

Hi Joe - yes, I have no children. Not really interested in having any. You describe the situation of "a little teenage female duckling and you allow her to go to a party and there she is hooked onto a drug by some low-life and unbeknownst to you (...) " as if this is something that the parent has absolutely nothing to do with, that it's all some sort of all powerful, outside influence, that neither Duck nor Duckling has any control over - or rather, what it seems like what you are saying, is that either parent, or child can easily be absolved of any responsibility, because of 'the bad man'. While I see your point, and yes, there certainly will always be unforeseen circumstances, it's also a parent's job to try to minimize those as much as possible - if you raise a child properly, I believe, you greatly minimize the possibilities of them falling into such a trap. Since it was possible for my parents to raise me to avoid getting addicted to alcohol (in a culture that drinks), or to cigarettes (in a culture that smokes rivaling the Japanese), as well as coffee (coming from the capital of coffee drinkers), I would have to assume that such a feat is certainly possible by other parents (especially since my parents didn't do anything special to achieve this). Likewise, I've had my share of offers of various substances by 'the bad man' in my childhood, and I always managed to decline it. I certainly don't think I am anything special in that regard - or maybe, what you are saying.... is that I am...? Seriously, the point I am trying to make is that a responsible parent has to take at least 50% of the culpability (if not more, like 90%) when their child falls in such a trap. Considering most parents practice absenteeism, their failure in that respect is not really that surprising. If you are a parent, can you name 10 friends your child hangs out with? Can you name the top 10 songs they like? I'm all up for debating this, if you like, but we should continue this in another thread, if you feel up to it. You raised some valid points, but left out some equally valid ones, I feel.
