Recently talked to a "nice" girl, not bar girl and she is asking for from 100,000 to 200,000 baht for her family plus a lot of gold, and monthy expenses too.
Seems like quite a bit...
Any recent information about this practice?

This will be an interesting thread before it is finished.
My wife just told me about her cousin that married a Thai man. He gave her family 200K and 5 baht gold. He has been working in Taiwan.
I, personally, gave nothing to my wife's family. I have since built her a home with all the trimmings.

The dowry matter has been in some thread, but I don't remember where. 
This tradition differs a lot in Thailand.
Mostly in the poor Isaan it is common practice.
When a woman gets married, she will 'leave her family' and hence belong to her man's family thus she should take care of her (man's) family ONLY.
In modern times the dowry has been often used as a pretext to 'milk' the (farang)
groom.
Though high dowries are not uncommon between Isaan people. My 1st maid's dowry was 80.000 THB pls 2 baht gold. The groom worked as wheelchair service in a hospital and his family sold some land to pay for the dowry.
When I got married I also have paid a dowry, the cash is in a saving account in my wife's name.
As the only family member from her side is grandma, who she grew up with -now living with us- the money is 'parked' in case grandma gets ill or else.
The 5 baht gold stay with K. Yai.
Celebrities sometimes announce 'multimillion' dowries when getting married.
My Thai-Chinese family does not know this tradition and does not approve it.

Forget the dowry.... it's the cotinual demanding, or expecting, of money for the rest of your life that counts....
I gave no dowry but have since built a family home, got pushed into financing large plots of land and get more demands every bloody day.... the only thing that keeps me sane is that I tell myself that for every demand she gives me, the more I will P4P. For every night she goes out with her Thai friends, I will go out and mong. This sort of keeps me happy.

Well, I have steered clear so far of any financial demands. My wife has never asked for paying something for somebody from her family.
At our wedding she wanted to through all the relatives that came from her side out of our house, when they started discussing the use of dowry and else.
My house features a pool, guest house, 5 bathrooms etc... and the relatives' fantasy sparked as usual...
She real turned berserk at her kin and actually stopped her,because this was n ot the way I wanted to see my wife at the wedding.
Conclusion: Dowry stayed with us for grandma's needy times.
In the end it is 'our' money and 'we' decide what it is used for isn't it?
BTW I totally disagree that 'monthly expenses' have to do with tradition! This is just 'milking'

I was never asked to pay one.......and since meeting mrs atl in 2002 have probably shelled out only about a grand in bits and pieces to her family...not that I am cheap charlie, they just never ask me.....
mrs atl doesnt pay for a thing here in the states...well lottery tickets and the phone bill, but that is just to be sure she uses her phone cards 
and she sends half her income (around $1000) home every month and has been doing that for 3 years...so if her mom, dad and grandma have not been saving anything, they are crazy because 30K to 35K baht a month is waaay more than they need....well I know some goes to help her little brother and his wife that had twins 2 years ago..but still that is a shitload for them 
Although, I will be building a house either on her parents property in Phitzanoluk or Grandma's land in Nakon Sawan (havent decided which yet) in about 5 or 6 years....
and all I want is a room with french doors leading to a small deck outside, 42 inch plasma TV and UBC, desktop computer, small fridge for beer and wine and a kick ass leather recliner oh and maybe a sofa to crash on, that can be locked up so nobody goes in when we are in the states 
Mom and Pop - in law can do whatever the hell they want to with the rest of the house.....

I bought 20 k gold for my wife of 10 yrs.Thats it no dowry why it aint my culture ?
Apart from short times and st hotels for her brother I give her parents 1k when I visit which aint often thats where it ends for me.
She sends a very small amount every few months,after living in the west she sees now with her own eyes her own family are nothing less than thieves if you allow it.
Mum and dad are ok thats why I always give something every year or so.
Houses no way,she bought property close to soi cowboy after all its in her name not falang, the location is suitable for my liking.
She wants to buy a bar (her cash) but I dont want to live in los full time so I told her nah. Why would I want to be in charge of 15 hookers. Its the same like she sends me
shopping saturday, shop is right next to the red light area so shopping always long time, dont these women think.
