... think Nov. 19th - give or take a day, A nice Thai tradition, of course the story was you and your beloved both place a krathong in the water, if they float off together, you stay together, if they drift apart ...... well, but in true Thai style think, if you do happen to have a genuine TG with you, she may insist on just the one Krathong, that way you dont take any chances !!

I was in Pai for Loy Kratong as well as Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai. I thought Pai was the best (not the biggest) because it really had a local feel to it. Chiang Mai was the opposite too big and too many tourists. Mae Hong Son was in between...
Keep in mind that celebrations did not seem to happen all on the same day in these different towns... so you need to check. I just got very lucky that I hit things on the right days..

Bros, Loy Krathong is on Nov 19 according to my TGF: Everyyear Thai people have loykatung festival.This year loykatung festival is 19 november.

Loy Krathong questions...
When is it this year? I have read somewhere that it will be on Nov 24,25 and 26. Is it a 3 day affair? I thought it was just one day. The info I read made it sound as if it were a 3 day affair with the floatings taking place on the 26th.
WHere is the best place to be for LK? I guess you want a river so BKK comes to mind but I was thinking about CHang Mai or Sukhothai??
ANy suggestions would be appreciated since I am planning to be in LOS for it for the first time this year.

Since I've got my LOS calendar right here on top of my computer monitor, it's November 26th this year.

rivers are the place in BKK. People go down to where the river taxis launch.
in Pattaya it's into the ocean or you can pay a ton to throw your krathong into your hotel's pool.
Some hotels charge 1k Baht/person to have dinner and launch a krathong
We go to oceanside restaurants around here, have a nice big, late dinner, then float the krathong out till we can hardly see it, then it's off home.
BTW, the coolest I've seen is when Halloween & LK were simultaneous, 2001

Its the 26th this year.
The celebrations take place EVERYWHERE, so you pay your money and take your choice.
As said,
Bangkok its the river.
At the sea side its the beach
On the farm its a puddle
Every Moo baan wil have a local event.
Two years ago I was invited up to Sukhothai. Beautiful festival, huge night market, show about the history of the festival (in Thai) with lights and music in front of the old capital ruins. I would recommend it. Get seats on the grass for the show, Thai picnic and drinks are included.
