I am planning on being in Thailand from mid. December on, just wondering about the Christmas season there. Is Christmas celebrated by Thai's. How about new years, is Thai new year the same as ours in North America?

- by and large no big deal here, although of course department stores try and cash in on the Christmas thing, and most upmarket Hotels will try and get you for the compulsory Xmas AND New years dinner ; sure to be additional parties etc, never let it be said Thais waste the chance of a party or drink ... but probably Chinese New year a few weeks later gets as much if not more attention, then of course the big go is thai New year, or Songkran. On the festival thing, Loy Krathong, comming up soon, Nov. 19th, is a pretty cool affair, the Thai version of Valentines day, most couples flock to a waterway/river, and launch a couple of small rafts with a candle in them, - superstition has it if the rafts or "krathongs" drift off together, you stay together, whereas if they drift apart ....... of course to ecconomise, and also be on the safe side, you can just go with the one "krathong" for you both !!

However, there are a lot of New Year's Parties and fireworks. The best place, IMO, for that is to go to one of the nice hotels on the river; the cost is very reasonable compared to a similar party in the states.
