I was planning to be in BKK the first week of Dec on business, but found out that the 5th is the King's biay.   Is this just a one day holiday or do businesses close for more than one day???

I assume that all bars are closed then as well apart from Grace, right?  And again, is this just on the 5th or does it last more than one night???

thanks..

some of the big companies give a few days, the small ones run by locals typically give just that day.

Go to your local store (old style, not 7-11), should be able to get your grog in a brown paper bag

FarangBha.
agreed, shops will still sell alcohol if the bars will not.

i posted before that on my last trip,my friend and i bought spirits in the local supermarket and just mixed them with soft drinks bought in the bar.

From experience, I've found that it seems to be illegal for shops to sell, but its fine to actually drink on premises.  Hence restaurants are ok, provided there is no attitude about getting drunk on the kings b'day.  Althugh this goes against the electral law which is suppossedly in place to avoid political parties throwing bashes as a means of vote buying -

Perhaps Pack can enlighten us more

The King's Birthday has nothing to do with "electoral law".

It's a sign of respect. The King is so highly respected, as we all know, that his Bday is practically equated with a religous holiday.

The laws regarding sale of alcohol within 24hrs of election is a seperate issue.
