Bros,
I know that this is not a sexy question, but... On one of my recent trips from BKK to Pattaya a taxidriver told me that there are plans for a subway in BKK.
Does anyone of you know if this is true and if yes, for what area and when it will be opened?

It's true and apparently near completion -- but the skytrain was "nearly finished" for years before it opened. The subway route is set to tie in w/ the skytrain and serve places that it does not.

The subway is due to open in May of 2004, but as noted, who knows for sure..
You can see the exit/entrance at the corner of Asoke and Sukhumvit ..
It was a huge mistake due to the cost, but some Khunying didn't want a skytrain running near her hotel, so she helped to get it underground.
Cost was about three times what a skytrain would have cost and took much longer.
the reason for the delay now is that somehow they didn't get the "trains" ordered on time and it will take quite a while to build them??

The underground route was finally fixed
as a result of an opinion pole which comprised
mainly guys on this forum, MP's,BG's,sideliners
TPE and all major owners of the places this sample
of the public work and frequent.It will enable
one to start the night in Patpong, catch the BTS
to Nana, get back on and get off at Cowboy,
then go underground to every entertaiment
complex along Ratchada, or for Packripper
the other direction. Dam shame we have to
wait until mid 2004 before the trains arrive!

oldhand you made me just laugh a lot!
but your explanation seems to be about right, the planning could have been that way. but may be it was more some thai men with the same sort of intention behind it! i personally can't wait until it opens as things will get a lot easier around sukhumvit, esp. the access to all the ratchada places around late afternoon, as this is usually a useless and time consuming journey from suk to ratch on any given afternoon!

Actually my subway stop is at the Huay Kwang intersection. They were going to put it 2 blocks up the road..... but that wouldn't have been convenient for me so I pulled some strings.
