Got myself into a bad situation last night....on the piss....and only Singha at hand........ hold my nose and down it fast....... but wait....it tasted excellent (ish....lets not over do the drama). Then I remembered reading that Boon Rawd Brewery had discussed a few months ago a change in recipe for Singha....less hops....more taste...... Anybody know if this change is now in place and when it happened....I ended up having more a few...and my head is fine this morning.......???

Well I can't figure why they would want to change the taste, because IMHO Singha was the best tasting Thai beer by a county mile. This is all I drank for a solid month in LOS and I found it just as good if not better than the Aussie beers.

One reason for changing the taste might be to try to get back some (understatement!) of their lost market share. However I think it is probably more their marketing department that missed the train. Not my beer and probably never will, cheers Freddy.

While in LOS Singha is my beer! Change of recipe...? I do not know, usually beer brewers do not change their recipe. They might change the source of ingredients. Here is the link to the homepage of the makers of Singha, if it is of any interest to the forum.

I have been a home-brewer for many years and make a not-so-bad glass. I have taken some of my brews to Thailand and my friends have really enjoyed its rich malty flavor with a very slight sweet aftertaste, and strong kick.... and I would love to show them how to brew a good dark ale or stout, although I know most Thais do not really have a taste for it. Singha is a good beer but a little heavy on the hops, I think. Hops are used in three stages for beer. The effect is dependent on the time it is in the wort; the longer it is in the wort the more bitterness is released and flavor. The first use is for bitterness, the second for taste, and the third for smell, or "nose." I think Sigha could cut down a little on the taste side. But, I do think it is a good beer. Just my two-baht's worth. I brew what I drink and drink what I brew. And remember, never trust a skinny brewer....lol

I have been drinking Singha here for over 30 years now and detected a taste change a few weekes ago, much less sharp, and not so much kick. I metioned this on another thread and was told that yes, Boonrawd Brewery has changed the formulation to reduce the alchohol content to 5% (from 6) and to make the brew softer with the view to attracting younger drinkers more used to US stlye "beer". Definitely not an improvement as far as I am concerned; I am presently trying out a range of alternatives! I personally believe that the Marketing Department of Boonrawd has screwed up in a major way over the past 5 - 10 years; they once had 80% Market Share in Thailand and instead of holding onto that with the tried and true Singha brand they reacted to new entrants to the market by fragmenting their own Market; introducing a range of new products to try to compete when I truly believe there was no need to. End result; they have an overall reduction in total Market Share together with increased Production and other costs associated with having to produce and market several new Brands.

What about Singha Gold? To be honest I've started to prefer that over regular Singha for the last year or so...
