Was eating at one of the VERY local Thai eateries the night before last and they were Suriyothai the movie on DVD. Setting was the mid 1500's. Did actually see bu a 1/3 of it perhaps but... WOW! What a spectacular production! Stunning sets, costumes, periodicity, truly an epic film. Hollywood could not have done it finer. Theirs had english subtitles and made watching very satisfying. I was thinking I gotta get my own once back in LOS. Anyway just thought some of the brothers might like to comment on this awesome movie. And if you haven't seen it, well DO!

Agreed...it is a stunning film, one of my favourite DVD's......of course now edited by Francis Ford Coppolla for the American market where it recently opened.......why can't they just leave a good thing alone..... Also recommend Jan Dara....and Sip Sii Tulaa as good Thai films....and if you can stomach the whiny bastard.....Prang Chompoo......

Skip, I saw the Thai version with subtitles and it was amazing production values (especially for a Thai movie) but the narrative was difficult to follow even if you are reasonably versed in Thai history and it was too long. Most critics (and many veiwers) agreed with me on this. I would LOVE to see the Coppola cut (Could you ask for a better editor?) and I suggest you try to see that one. Thai films have begun to improve greatly over the last 5 years or so, even winning awards at intl festivals and such. The titles Yurune gave are all good suggestions IMO but keep in mind they are not period films like Suriyothai. Another good Thai film is Faan Ba Karaoke (sp).

Suriyothai is a spectacular production indeed. As pointed out by Mr. Joe, the movie is too long and even it was extensively cut from the original version....Jesus! SKIP, you can get Suriyothai the movie on DVD for around 900 TB and with English subtitles. Nice deal for a piece of art. Where? Available at MANPONG disco centre. Several branches I am aware of, two in MBK, one in Discovery Centre and many many more around Bangkok. Cheers!

I must admit I like long films......I thought the opening scenes of Deerhunter were wonderful..the wedding.....and were too short...LOL MrJoe...yes...certainly the choice of Coppolla was a wise one...though I though Sylvester Stallone may have added a certain something to the film.....
