On the way to my TGF home. We stopped at a fruit stand. Among the things she bought was a bush with green fruit the size of a small plum. My TGF said it was GinMak. Alot of fruit on bush, also ants. Her Mom grinds the fruit in a morter and chews the pulp. When she spits this out the spit is red. I tried it, didn't get high, tasted terrible. What is it? Why chew it?

It's betel nut.....it is eaten with a red paste called boon....and a leaf called bai ploo.......it's the paste that makes the spit red...not sure of the ingredients....I'm sure others can add more

It has a mild stimulant effect, and is chewed habitually, just as Bolivian Indians chew coca leaf. You will see it among older folks, all over Issan, and most of SEA.
I never heard it called GinMak - maybe your GF was trying to tell you her mom eats it a lot

No...it is called GinMak....I've checked again......this is definately the Southern word (I assume CalEden was in Isaan for which I can neither confirm or deny).....though the first name I was given was just Mak......(hor heep, mor maa, sala aaar (LOL..how may a's?), kor kai......but I checked if the kin was eat...and was told no....it was the full name.....but my dictionary shows only Mak.
The leaf of the plant is called Bai Ploo....which is eaten as part of the package.....

I was sure she said GinMak and I was in Isan. I tried it, got no stimulation. Yes, salaviate and spit alot and alot. I guess if you chew alot you will get stimulated, but I don't want black teeth. Thanks Yurune, Smegma, haam sup.
