OK bars and girls are great but......? Is there any theatre and stage shows in Bangkok? Are the Thais adverse to this art form. I don't mean the traditional ancient Thai. But Broadway, Drury Lane etc etc. ?

Being in that business I was trying to find interest in booking some US shows on two trips. There is the National theatre but it does not do much and appears to be in a state of disrepair. There is a move on to build a new performing arts center in BKK but it's years away at best. There are faily shows and pop shows generally promoted by BEC Tero....check the papers

Stage plays, plus worldwide visiting artists & groups, are a reasonably often occurrence. Not at all hard to find. Weekly listings (obviously) are in the Post & Nation entertainment sections, monthly in Metro & other mags, with advance listings by Ticketmaster. Major venues notably include the Bangkok Playhouse and Thailand Cultural Center, with the Patravadi Theatre, upscale hotels i.e. Dusit Thani, and the universities good to go also. Are the Thais adverse to this art form? Not the least. BKK has an outstanding resident theatre troupe, in addition to university drama schools - plus touring productions. Recently attended an absolutely super production of Jesus Christ, Superstar - in English - with almost all Thai cast, including starring roles. Was not there but they also staged recent major productions of Annie and Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Each fall BKK also hosts a diversified extravaganza, their International Festival of Dance & Music (sorry, no chrome poles however).

The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra is outstanding, with a full seasonal schedule of international and Thai classical works plus occasional jazz/showtunes, with world-class chamber music groups appearing regularly at hotels, Goethe House, etc. I suspect that you regulars know that, BB, tongue-in-cheek or not, but perhaps interested newbies aren't as aware of the extent of international cultural events available in BKK, in addition to the exceptional local Thai/Chinese cultural events, evidenced by the questions which started the thread. Could be those are among the many OTHER reasons Bangkok was selected the favorite travel destination by subscribers of Travel & Leisure Magazine last year.

CiaoCiao, actually, was a serious question. Thanks for the info. Have been too damn lazy to check it out so I tossed out that question. I'll follow up, as I plan to be in LOS for several months this summer. Would really be nice to see, in addition to all the other stuff. - Balls

Sorry, but I beg to differ. BSO cannot be called outstanding; I would use that word for the other owrld-class orchestras. The BSO does not have a full seasonal schedule, if by schedule one means the typical schedule of orchestras like the New York Philarmonic or the London Philharmonic Orchestra, or the Boston Simphony, the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philarmonic, etc. -these are oustanding orchestras. Now don't get me wrong, the BSO makes a good effort. But it is the lack of a real full schedule (and of money) that prevents it from bringing in top class performers that would take the ragtag BSO to another level. Lets just say it is ok for now for Bangkok. Better than nothing.

Thanks CiaoCiao and Smegma for your comments. I have seen a couple events at the Goethe put on by some friends but thats it. Living in London you tend to get spoilt for choice in these matters. But not spoilt for cost. As for classics I could always go via KL and watch my cousin conduct at the Petronas.
