So I had a co-worker drop by my cube yesterday. He knows i'm the SEA operations guy for our company and that i've traveled to that area. He tell's me that they (him and his wife) are trying to adopt a little girl from Thailand, Vietnam,China etc...... Of course i'm thinking, I met a nice 19 year old that I would like to adopt last month also. I could tell the guy was a button down serious type of person so I kept the conversation very professional. Anyway i'll cut to my question.....the adoption agencies are telling people that it's a waiting list of 6-18 months if you are looking to adopt a female. To adopt a male it's a matter of weeks with no waiting list. This surprised me because I thought most families would keep the male child to work the farm and carry on the family name. Obviously this is wrong. He was asking me if I had any insight as to why this was so. I have my guess as to why, but I may be maistaken. I know allot of heady Asians and BKK locals post on this board w/o any B/S so I would like to bounce this question off of you. Thanks in advance for the replies!

I would have also thought that most families would like to keep the boys. I have heard a lot of horror stories coming out of China about families killing the little girls because families there want boys to carry on the family name. I understand that each Chinese family can only have 1 child. But seriously, if your co-worker wants to adopt a 19 or 20 year old, can I put my referal on the list? LOL

Texas Farang, I'm reading a book at the moment that touches on this subject. According to the authour, poor families from the north/north east of Thailand view female babies as having much more "earning potential" (via prostitution)in adulthoold. The "earning potential" of young males is much less in comparrison. So.... female babies are more "desirable" for poor families than males. (I should add, I have serious doubts as to the accuracy of many so-called "facts" this book spouts. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if what I have just quoted is totally off-base, I KNOW plenty of other things in the book just aren't true. I hope someone 'in the know' CAN and DOES refute it!) btw the book in question is: Sex Slaves, The trafficking of women in Asia author: Louise Brown (and, no..... I DON'T recommend it, lol)

JUST FOR INFORMATION . In most Thai families (an influence from the Chinese Thais ) it is the youngest DAUGHTER's duty to take care of the parents in their old age . Hence every family likes to have at least one daughter . This explains why more boys than girls are abandoned . This also explains why most adoptions by Thai families are of girls . Of course , in poor & uneducated families there is the additional possibility of the girls higher earning capacity as compared to the boys .

Tex, Both the above comments are correct and I have heard this both several times from thai people. The girls have the earning potential and the responsibility to help care for the family, whether that be legit jobs or not depending on the family background. We are currently adopting here ourselves, but it is iner relative and has different requirments. I have been told, as I looked into it a little for a friend, that it can take up to 3 years from the time of application to the time of the child living with you in your country. There are plenty of kids in the orphanages, one I was told had about 1200, also to my great surprise was the fact that they have a lot of mixed race kids. I felt sure that this was incorrect because of the great desire for Thais to have farang/thai kids nowadays. But the mixed kids are generally from the girls who have no family to help look after them and they have no other choice. I think I have some document in my puter somewhere stored and if they relate to what you are after, I can send to you if you like.
