Request assistance. Planning on taking my long time TGF to her home town (Udon Thani). Yes, it's a family meeting visit. Looking for assistance in places to go, where to take out her family/friends, and night time entertainment (she'll be tagging alone, so no outside female activities). Looking at 3 possible hotels; Udon, Napalai and Ban Chiang. Any recommendations??? Airport Taxi or Hotel Taxi??? Dance Clubs, TGF likes to dance. Only spending 4 days and 3 nights there, then it's back to Pattaya. Since this is my first post, I'll explain the mosquito2002. Not up to Skylab, airport, helicopter or butterfly level.

Must be pretty serious if you are meeting the family? I have no experience with Udon Thani so I cannot help. Good luck with the in-laws.

Napalai Hotel is good, stayed there a few years ago. I am sure that you could arange a hotel taxi or minibus to pick you up from the airport. About the places to go, you say that it is her home town, she would be the one to advise you where. I think you could make the family happy with a meal at a local restaurant. Don't take them to a steak house (if they have any in Udon) chances that they would enjoy that are limited. The younger parts of the family would always enjoy a sing-a-song place, as long as it is not too "shady". See how things develop and take it from there. Have a nice trip.

Hey brother Mosquito, welcome to the brotherhood. If you'll check the main page of this forum, down at the bottom under forum topics there's one called Field Reports in Thailand. If you look in there there are a couple threads on Udon that may have some answers for you. Peace

Looks like I'm going to take my Eden Alumna next April back home. Should be interesting to see a different slice of Thailand. Any tips on how to act around her family other then not patting people on the head or rubbing my girls feet.

Mosquito: I always stay at the Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel in Udon Thani. It is real nice (actually luxurious) and is located next door to a large 3 story mall. They have a van that meets each of the 3 daily flights into Udon. The rate is 900 baht which includes breakfast for 1 or 2 people depending on whether you book single or double. The room has an in-room safe. Each room has both American and Thai toilet. In the mall, you will find several Thai restaurants. I took 2 young Thai ladies to one of the restaurants and they had about 10 different Thai foods and the bill was very reasonable, as I remember it was less than 500 baht. The mall has a large department store, a photo store, various small shops, KFC, pizza shop, a donut shop, and a Baskin-Robins as well as a grocery store. There is also a large bank in the mall where I have always received good service cashing travelers checks and exchanging US dollars for Thai baht. I stayed once at the Ban Chiang and although it was a nice hotel, I did not like the location. Good luck.

Agree, Charonsri is best, location wise - unless you keep a rental car with you - of course you could go and stay in Ban-nok with the in-laws for a day or two, No Hot water, air con, only Thai TV, roosters going off at 4am etc etc, great fun, well, for 5 or 6 hours ! Only 45 mins up to Nong Khai/Laos if you have nothing better to do, but upcountry life a tad more sedate than Bangkok ! Best of luck -
