Guys - as someone planning to be in BKK for a long time and knowing how crap and basic UBS cable tv is - I've spent ages figuring out if theres a way to receive TV - in my case from the UK while in BK.  Surfing the web i have come across a program called SnapStream which works in conjunction with a TV tuner PC card and allows you to stream over the web TV programs.   Basically what you do ( and I am going to try this before I leave for BKK ) is to set up a broadband ( DSL ) connection to your PC in your home in the UK ( or US etc) and leave the PC on and running the necessary software. You can then view the streamed TV programmes of your choice - albeit at poor quality.   Has anyone out there tried this approach ? I realise its a bit expensive since you need a PC with a DSL connection both in your home country AND in your BK room. But as I'm going to be here for nearly a year I feel its worth it - I'm a BBC and Channel 4 addict

Yeah.  Your plan seems fun, but also needlessly complicated, and I'm no computer novice.  Finding DSL or equiv. in Thailand might not be as easy as you think, and there are many issues with keeping a computer so far away up and running for a year or more.  UBC has BBC World at the very least, and possibly more of the BBC lineup is available for subscription.

Update:  Nope, they don't seem to have any more BBC.  Maybe you're already on the only path after all.  Still, I can't help but wonder if you'll eventually be addicted to some other form of entertainment after a year in BKK.  The only TV I ever watched in BKK was when I briefly glanced at whatever the BG or MP girl happened to have on.

On a more serious note, I did notice that my TGF gets only 6 channels on her standard cable in her apartment. But the major hotels have quite a few more. I assume the hotels are using satellite dishes to get CNN, etc? Would be interested to hear from someone who knows. I think I read somewhere that Thailand only has a few endemic channels, from local stations?

I get all the 25 (HBO, Cinemax, StarMovies, HallMark, etc, CNN, BBC, CNBC, TV5, etc.) channels (+Thai channels) on my UBC, except for the NHK channel which costs another 1,000 B. Damn, I am not forking out another 1,000 B for just one channel!

I checked out the UBC channels but the only BBC one was World - and the HBO one is a movie channel - not the latest full stuff shown in the US. So as I like our brit BBC1,2 and Channel 4 - ( graham norton for example ) i will investigat this more.  I plan to get my sister to look after the PC in the UK - in return for using it and getting a broadband connection.

nonchai,

best of luck in any case.  let us know how it goes if you get a chance.  If you have any computer questions feel free to post 'em, but it already sounds like you know what you're doing.

One thing though, as posted previously, good luck finding DSL internet connection in LoS.

I heard a couple years back a company was going to invest in DSL service in Thailand, but have never heard anything since. If you find it, let me know, I need something faster than the "turtle connection" I have now.
