Here's a request for some advice from some of the brothers living in LOS: I'm thinking about taking a few months off to travel a bit and smell some flowers (so to speak). Given how much I enjoyed my first trip to Thailand earlier this year, I'm thinking about spending 2-3 months hanging out/bopping around SEA. I think Thailand would make a great staging ground. I'm not sure whether it would be better to pick a quiet spot of beach to relax, making occassional trips to BKK for RTs and such - or, get an apartment in BKK. Any thoughts on your experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

Much love, but a lot of what you ask falls in the "up to you" bucket. You say "better", but what is better for you? Quiet beaches might not be cheap or quick to get back to the nightlife. Pattaya has a beach, but it's not quiet. Phuket has a quietish beach, so does Samui, but a lot of people slam the nightlife there. BKK you can always escape for cheap on the bus. Plus lots of apartments sitting empty right now so you can probably negotiate a 3-month lease with no problems. I know that I get tired of going to the beach everyday in less than a week. In your shoes, I'd probably pick either BKK or Pattaya.

V-Jay, Yeah, you're right about the subjective part. I guess what I'm asking for is any knowledge of a quiet beach location that's a relatively short jump away from BKK. I don't think Pattaya is what I'm looking for - and Phuket is more of a resort destination. I'm looking for the non-farang beach scene. And if anyone has done that type of thing - living in a hut on the beach for a few weeks at a time - is it too rustic? Were the living conditions such that they wanted something more modern? I'm looking to relax, read and write, and then hit the road to sightsee every once in a while. Just wondering if I can swing a beach location that's quiet but not too isolated since i would want to swing by BKK every once in a while.

Well there's a long stretch of beautiful coast north and (particularly) south of Hua Hin which is very largely local territory. Avoiding places like Cha-am, I imagine it wouldn't be hard to find something quite hut-like & secluded somewhere along there. If you needed any local R&R, there's a very small & laid-back nightlife scene in HH itself. Although small in quantity, quite a lot of the BGs there are high quality - in all senses. I have happy memories of it as I picked up a very delightful 24yo there. HH would serve as your local link to civilisation. And from there, of course, it's a doddle to get back to BKK - you can even fly now. Presumably you'd be planning to hire a jeep or something to stay mobile?

Thanks, Arcadius. That's the kind of info I'm looking for. Now I just need to do a little LOS map studying to put HH on my mental radar. I've been reading up on other locations as well. This could be a fun few months if I decide to take in SEA for a while. Thanks again.

I would definately have a look at Cha Am, as not too "touristy" yet, quiet during the week, but full of middle class thais on the weekends, also only about 3 hours and 150 bt on a bus from Bangkok - many condos/apartments there, that you could rent cheaply by the week - I would suggest that rather than montly, as monthly usually means a bond, and these dont often come back for various reasons, also being LOS, you never know who/what is going to come along - and give you a good reason to go someplace else - I stayed a couple of times at a place called Scandy resort, right on the beach - good rooms 500bt, but some smaller bungalows at the back, I figure you could rent for around 2000bt a week - I know it sounds idyllic, but usually, a week or two in the wilderness, and speaking little english to anyone, is usually enough - especially when the lights of Bkk are nearby ...

Padawan, I have a soft spot in my heart for Ao Nang, just northwest of Krabi, but then you will probably want to fly there. It is a resort town, but quiet this time of year. A few small P4P bars on the beachfront strip. From there you can take longtail boats to the near islands and ebaches, or the ferry out to the far islands, Koh Lanta, Kon Jim(/Jam?), etc. I think it was Koh Jam that had a treehouse bungalow with no TV. Anyway, this may be farther from BKK than you want to be, and maybe to many people and too much money ... but I remember sitting (naked at the time), with my TGF, on the back balcony of the Ao Nang Resort (3rd story) overlooking the little town, as the thunderstorms rolled in at sunset, last May. A memory that lingers. - Balls

Spent 2.5 moinths in LOS last year and am heading back for two this year. I like to spend time in Chiang Mai, just a little outside the town. eaasy enough to get to beaches and BKK when you want to.
