Does anyone have experience with the Thai Revenue Department. I am currently sitting in London on a business trip, and have just heard that my Company in Bangkok has been raided by the Revenue Department. What rights do they have (presumably they CAN do what they like) and what would anyone with a similar experience advise me to do, or my office staff to say to them...

Bribery will get you a long way with the revenue department. "Palm greasing" is a way of life in business here in LoS.

- correct - am told the usually make an outrageous demand - but it is "negotionable" so you offer something minimal, and eventually a happy ?? medium is reached - best of luck and hope you have a good negotiater !

asthete, my advice, a farang lawyer, a tahai lawyer and a thai negotiator. The rev will back down a little on how much they are looking for in squeeze if they know that you might fight this if the figure is too high. the thai lawyer will show you mean biz, and the falang lawyer can keep the thai lawyer in check. Thats what I would do..... but then I might also just stick my head in the sand and hope that it will all go away

aesthete, Revenue Department seems to be having one of its spurs of activity at the moment - the two areas of focus seem to be VAT/Revenue Tax and Property Tax. One of my branch offices has just been inspected and we have been told that we have a problem with the non-payment of property tax relating to the lease agreement. Fortunately, I have a Thai partner that can handle this type of annoyance relatively easily. If you also have a local Thai partner (and if he is any good) then I would lean on him first to find a local solution. Failing that then ask your accountant to contact Revenue Department and find out what sort of "problem" you have and the amount of penalty. Once you know the numbers involved it is much easier to make a judgement on whether you want to negotiate or just chalk it up to experience. It might also be a good idea to find out if Revenue Department is acting on its own initiative or if it has been put up to this by a business competitor which could mean a different course of action. Good luck.
