July 13 is ASARNA BUCHA DAY and July 14 is BUDDHIST LENT DAY......but I don't know what goes on either day. Can anyone enlighten us? I will be ther for one week which includes both of these days....I hope that Buddhist Lent is not the same as Catholic Lent 'cause I'm not giving up ANYTHING on my last full day in LOS.

I'll take a swing at it. Asarnhabucha is the day that commemorates the Buddha's most important sermon more or less the day he founded the discipline. It's always the 15th day of the eight lunar month. Asahalabucha, or Buddhist lent begins the "rains retreat" of the monks. They go back to the temple and spend every night there for the next 3 months.
I seem to recall that everything shuts down for those two days. Whether that's midnight-to-midnight like secular holidays or if sunrise and sundown play in, I can't remember.
Either way, sorry farang, but your second Sunday and Monday in July are f_cked! Find an LT from Saturday is my advice. But remember that since her bar and most every freelance place is gonna be shut, you need to bargain hard and reduce her per diem for the two days.
You may find transportation hard to get in the couple of days before and after. People use the time to go home to the village, plus monks are given priority in transportation though that's less of a problem. Guaranteed a farang will be bumped if it's you vs. a monk however. Get some face and volunteer your seat if you can.

Got a longish stay between time you arrive and the holidays? Then you should casually ask all the girls you take prior about their holiday plans. Maybe come up with a few strong candidates, get phone#'s and swoop on them Saturday or Friday even. That's the ticket instead of a Saturday crapshoot with a girl who may be a 3-day dud.

I'd expect anything whose primary business is sin to shut. Girls and booze joints. Restaurants should be open but may not serve alcohol. Depends partly on whether they know the cops aren't looking. Nightclubs might close because they make their money from booze.
