Does anyone know of a good source of information regarding what happened in Thailand during and immediately after the second world war?  Or better yet does anyone on the forum have direct experience?

I've read _Thailand: A Short History_ by David Wyatt.  The book (obviously) does not focus on WWII but he does a pretty good job of summarizing what happened in Thailand during the war.

I didn't know until recently that Siam barely missed being named an Axis power in 1945.
interesting:

( to see the other letters use "previous" and "next" at bottom of page)

"Another sign of friendship is Siam is that refrained from the vote against Japan at the League of Nations meeting, which con‚demned Japanís action in Manchuria in March 1933.  Siam was alone in her refusal to vote"

This is Thailand's recent history in short .....

1. We have never been a European colony !!! .... yeah right ..... France "asked" for parts of Cambodia and Laos that had been captured by Thailand and Thailand gave it away for free.
2. England and France friendly "requested" trade agreements and Thailand said yes to agreements that only had advantages for the European countries and almost none for Thailand itself.
3. Hey Japan is winning the war ... Thailand supports Japan.... "Yeah, we have never been occupied by the Japanese during WW2" ..... Who created the Birma death railway then? .... smurfs????
4. Hey Japan is not winning the war (late 1945) .... Now Thailand supports the allied forces

I think if Luxemburg would send its navy to Thailand, it would start negotiations with Luxemburg and probably rent them Phuket for 1$ a year just to try avoid a war ...

Lucky for them, Luxemburg doesn't have a navy. 555555555555

Thailand did support the axis, no doubts about that.
Now i start to wonder why there are so much German and Japanese tourists in Thailand ...

Thailand is like Italy: they may not be sharp enough to join up with the right side in the beginning but they sure as hell are smart enough to switch to the winning side before it's over... Ý

Mr Alan
It might seem improbable now, but Japan was a ruthless imperialist power in the 1930's. Just ask the Koreans, Chinese, Philippinoís, etc. who were invaded, raped, and tortured by the Japanese invaders. Fortunately, Japan (more specifically the US occupation after WWII) completely transformed its constitution and government to make such events unlikely in the future.

Yes, I thought most people were aware of it.  But 3cazzi's post seems to question as to which was the right side in WWII.

However, with regard to Thailand in WWII, they obviously did not want to suffer the same fate as the other nations in Asia with regard to Japanís brutal aggression, which probably was the primary motivation for their collaboration with Japan. But I don't really know who ran Thailand back in those days or what realistic options they had.

Who was the right side? It shouldn't be too hard to figure out , but these days people are scared to make a choice....Political correctness sucks !
