Hi folks -
I will be coming to Thailand soon and be on my own for the 1st week of my stay in BKK - then somene else will join me for the rest of the journey.
I wonder if any of the more seasoned travellers or residents have been in a similar position and how they have organised themselves, in terms of having fun in bars and meeting regular girls in town.
I already know all the usual places (NEP - Patpongs and son on) but are there any places, such shopping centres, regulars bars, university cafes, where farangs hang out to meet local beauties?

Hey brother Sarge, welcome to the brotherhood. If you're talking about meeting non P4P ladies then good places would be shopping centers like MBK or Pantip Plaza. You know how the ladies love to shop  . One word of warning though. Non P4P ladies or good thai girls are very approachable but with most of them it takes time for things to reach a certain point ( If you get my drift ) so be prepared for things to develope rather slowly. Hate to sound rude, but this really seems like a job for your average guidebook. I've noticed about 10-20 such books on Thailand in any given bookstore I go to and you can get many more online. My main suggestions are Frommers, Fodors, Lonely Planet, and Rough Guides.
Foreigner-friendly conventional nightlife locations are often included in most guidebooks. THIS site is mainly geared for those topics that guidebooks tend to overlook.

MBK and Siam Square. There are lots of bored teenagers hanging around; remember to check out the cinema area in MBK( on the higher floors, cant remember which floor exactly).

If you consider "local beauties" to normal non bar-type girls here is my suggestion....
Malls: MBK, Siam Discovery and Emporium to see cute babes. Odds that you can score quickly but at least eye candy.
University cafes: Try the one at Chula University. Most of the chicks take meals at the restaurant behind Chula Books (Siam Square) but again odds that you can get more than a smile in your first approach.
Regular bars: So many. Try the GLAS HOUSE at Rama IX. Other option are the bars in Sukhumvit 55 (Thonglo) i.e. ESCUDO and another option might be the bunch of nice local pubs along Prachachuen Rd. i.e. Sugar Beat.

In spite of the verbal flatulence of the two newbie idiots that seem to think that they have a clue as to what this forum is about, the answer to your question is: nowhere and everywhere.
What I mean by this is that if you take the time to explore outside the usual nightlife venues (Harry and cmore gave good examples), and just generally go about your business, you will meet many girls each day who may be interested in spending some time with you. These girls are EVERYWHERE, and the only limitation is your charm and self-confidence. Aside from MBK, Siam Square, and Pantip(!) (cmore, you ARE demented  ), the World Trade Center, Gaysorn and all the surrounding stuff at Ratchdamri/Ploenchit are good, all along Silom Road, etc. At the lower end, day trips on the Chao Phraya Express boat to various stops along the river, rides to various BTS stops, and walking around the markets that are close to them, all can yield great experiences. Plenty other examples on this site, as well.
If you like to play pool, there are a number of laid-back venues where you can take your time and laugh a bit before the mad dash back to the room...
If you are looking for 'good' Thai girls, be prepared to spend a LOT of time, and I would suggest that for your short visit, they are NOWHERE, meaning you just won't have enough time to get something going.
If you DO stay a while, you will have the best luck with girls that you see in a business or educational setting a few times a week. Let them get to know you as a person, and disassociate you with the average punter. A little flirting, and if there's a spark, Bob's your uncle!
Best bet is to be INTERESTED in them as people and as Thais; the rest will follow. But that is true everywhere, as you probably already know...
Be nice to them, and have fun!

I mentioned Pantip because when I was there in Sept. they had some kind of display set up on the first floor and there were a lot of models wearing hip boots that were FINE! Someone please give an old codger a ray of hope and report that those ladies are approachable . Peace

Yes, the best advice is to be yourself. When you least expect it things happen. During the day I did the tourist things and at night I whore mongered like hell. During my tourist persona, I met my TGF (regular girl) at the hotel where we both were staying. We met at the breakfast buffet over the padia noodles. With some help from her sister it was magic from the start. The daytime CalEden won her heart. With regular girls it goes slow. But is well worth it.
I don't know if I was lucky but things can happen during short holidays. Things really did not come to fruitition until the second visit to LOS. It doesn't hurt to farm.
