Is it recommended to hook up with a local tour company to do local tours or go it alone? How long does it take to go through some of these tourist places. Snake farm? Grand Palace? Etc...? I understand there is a floating market located a hour or two away from BKK. Is it worth going to? Are there any places to see that are a must see and others that are a no-go?

i'm not a real touristy guy but I think you should check out some of the major temples while in bkk. the hotel I stayed at on my first trip to los, holiday mansion (wouldn't recommend it), included a free temple tour with our own personal guide and van. wat po (reclining bhudda), the grand palace and the emerald bhudda, and wat arun were some of the temples we visited.
now it's nice to explore on your own like rtb posted but I would actually recommend doing the tour deal for the first time. especially some one as green as yourself. sure you'll pay a little more but you will get a small course of thai history and customs 101. oh, and our tour guide just happended to be probably the hottest thai girl I have seen to date in los and she spoke very good english. too bad she was married, she was something special.

never been to the snake farm in bkk but ive been to one in phuket and samui. couldn't imagine it being to different. it was ok. watched guys wrangle cobras. I think a much more worthwhile event to check is the thai boxing. there are two stadiums in bkk, Ratchadamnoen and Lumpini. I went to Lumpini. forget what you see on tv and in the movies. this is the real deal and a must see.

Just take a Taxi to the Snake Farm (Old Pastuer Institute). Snake show is at 2:00 PM. They have King Cobras and regular cobras. There is 14 foot King Cobra they let loose and play with. Great show gone twice.
Last time there the King cobra cage was unlocked pushed on the door and it opened.
