One of my favourite places in Patpong is Times Square which has the Elvis impersonator. Terrific show with the 4 ladies who flit on and off the stage at regular intervals. The smallest one has an absolute killer smile, while the lady on the right as you look at the stage is extremely animated. I cannot help wondering how many would survive a ST with her.
Great entertainment IMO when compared to the gogo's which are about as exciting as watching paint dry.

HyperBaby, with you preferring the more upscale places (where you get the same thing or less for more money) we will take this as a personal opinion without influencing others who like to have a good time.
Drinks are (especially in bars like Queens Castle I, II and III) cheap at 70 baht (before 10:30 pm) and the girls have less taboos and less demands than their counterparts at Nana or SC.
It's true, however, that many older women choose to work there. But all in all, probably a more fun place than those places mentioned above,

I still shy away from patpong because of the horror stories I´ve heard of people going into bars and then being vastly overcharged and/or threatened with physical violence.

Yep, same here. Call me paranoid, but I've also read a few rip-off stories - all of them in Patpong! It seems that the scenario goes like this: you go up the stairs (be wary of the bars where you have to go up the stairs), have a drink, watch the show, and then get your bill. 
Should you refuse to pay the astronomical bill, you are quickly surrounded by several bouncers who will gladly show you the error of your ways.
It's probably a minority of the bars that do it, but I didn't feel like taking my chances.

Some rules of thumb that I’ve found useful
Avoid the touts scurrying around the edges
If you go inside a place and it gives you bad vibes leave immediately. Don’t even buy one drink. Best to have a veteran friend around if you venture into a joint. Personally, I stick mainly to the open-air bars.
Keep an eye on your bin. I don’t feel comfortable unless I have the receipts in that little cup showing me exactly how much I’ve spent.
Pretty simple really… I’ve had tons of fun in PP and actually prefer it over NEP.

Golden Star – that’s very similar to my experience. But don’t let it deter you from enjoying the area. I didn’t follow the simple rules, but you can.

I have taken a walk through Patpong during my very first trip in LOS and, well, being the quintessential newbie, got ripped off at the Night Market buying some souvenirs. This already put a damper on the Patpong experience (I am a very cheap guy). Then, I walked around the area a bit, but I just didn't likes the vibes.
I make it a habit to stay at a hotel on Sukhumvit Road, so why go to Patpong to barfine a cute lass when I can do the same thing a few steps away from my hotel at the NEP where I know that I run no such risk of being taken for a ride?
I'll stick to the NEP for now.

Patpong was nothing but an open rice field when it was purchased by Poon Pat, a Chinese emmigrant to Thailand who had married his rich employer's daughter.
Eventually his son - Udom Patpong - a graduate of an American university - turned the area into a warren of quiet piano lounges, nichy restaurants, bank branch offices, and airline ticketing agencies.
However, in 1969, an American ex-Airman named Rick Menard opened up Patpong's first a-go-go bar: THE GRAND PRIX and history was in the making.
Next followed Burmese Frank's SUPERSTAR BAR and so on and so forth.
Still, during the Vietnam War era, most American GIs on leave partied at the bars and massage parlors on New Petchburi Road.
It was not until the late 1970s that Patpong became notorious for wild sex shows and wilder shenanigans of every stripe.
Package sex tours of horney Continetal Europeans were the cause of all that.
Things calmed down a bit in 1989 when Udom Patpong's hungry daughter installed a silly swap meet rip off touristy trap right smack dab in the middle of Patpong Road #1.
Overpriced junk for newbies.
Patpong #2 is still a good place.
Ripoff bars reached their apex in 1996 when a German lady was beaten in one and miscarried her unborn child at that very same time. This made world headlines and the upstairs ripoff bars closed down for some time.
I hear a few of them may be in business again.
All in all, if you go to Patpong, stick with Patpong Road #2 and steer clear of upstairs bars on either road.
