BlueHawaii: You are NOT wrong. For the past 6 months, my bank has been doing a number on me everytime I withdraw from an atm. Not a great rate, a "non-member" atm fee and NOW a "foreign currency" rate. When I asked why, "hedge for currency fluctuations". OK, maybe for baht. But how about in dxb where the local currency is PEGGED to the dollar? It NEVER fluctuates.
Good lessons, and brought back some memories. My "taxi experience" was New Year's Eve, some shows down near the Grand Palace. NO taxi's available. We started walking... and walking... and walking... only hope was clear the area far enough to get away from the thousands of others in the same fix. Finally, a taxi stopped 30 meters ahead to drop off his passengers... been a LONG time since I sprinted towards the end-zone to save the touchdown.

I too spent my first (and last) miserable hours in Patpong recently. If it isn't the relentless touts grabbing your arm or throwing 'sex show' placards in your face, its the asinine street vendors trying to sell you a watch for 1500THB that they'll gladly accept 600THB for, once you start walking away.
Camelot Castle was by far the most hard sell joint I have ever patronized, and the girls were only mariginal at best. At the next stop, my mates and I were bum-rushed by a pack of aggressive katoey's as we walked in to King's Corner. Basically had to tell them to piss off before they'd leave us alone. One of my mates had a hard time believing half of the dancers were guys, decided to leave Patpong before he got too drunk and less sensible.
As had been many times, STEER CLEAR OF PATPONG, noobs and vets alike.

On the taxi issue,, I have had similiar problems,, but being non averse to moto-taxis I never wait long. I find the natural air-con comfort of no helmet a blessing and having ridden bikes since I was 8,the low speed but between traffic manovoures are non threatening.
Flame away about the dangers but in my opinion the greatest danger of a moto-taxi is that you will have more time to damage your liver.
