I do hope that is the only scam I hear about. Surely there could not be any others, I mean we are from first world countries and these are just TBG's..right.

A couple of years ago now I was in Phuket and at Promthep Cape at sunset. Got talking to a nice guy, mid 50's or so, a countryman who had arrived in Thailand the day before for the first time on a week long trip.
He loved the place and the people were wonderful, he said. I took one look at his two Thai tour guides - a man and a woman and thought some are but these sharks ain't!
He went on to tell me about the little bit of trouble he had had the night before, his first night in Thailand and his first night at the bars. He had got drunk, got arrested and spent the night in jail - the police chief was a lovely fellow though - left the cell door open and took him to his own home this morning for a meal - seems an assault complaint was filed by one of the bar girls - but he had paid the 10 thousand baht fine and now things were sorted.
Yeah, he loved the place and was already planning to move to Thailand - his guides had already shown him property that he was thinking of buying. At this stage I said something like "Mate, be careful. We can't own land here. Get some real advice first." The female shark then called him to look at something and the male shark placed himself between us - I got the message and moved back to the TGs I was with.
That guy had been in Thailand less than two days at that time, had clearly read nothing, knew nothing and was telegraphing to all that he had money - some sort of early retirement payout.
I don't doubt he could have "married" before the end of his trip to. Enjoy.

If you spend no more than a few minutes perusing readers' submissions on Stickman's website, you will see that there is a new sucker born literally every minute.
