... whoa, Blonk, my man... trusting your passport as security in the hands of a Thai is very risky stuff... like putting you 'nads in a vice grip, the crank lever of which is firmly in their grip.
... I am always perplexed by how easily some give up a passport at the mere request... hotels, motorcycle rentals (eee-yikes!), etc.
... I travel with a couple of copies of my passport, never disclosing that I have the original... I just explain that my passport is in the Chinese Embassy getting a travel visa... a copy has always satisfied them.
... I would stay at no hotel that requires the original... no way.

And make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity before departure to the Kingdom. I was turned away at check-in once for this faux pas. I was devastated. I said I will miss an essential business meeting! A big fat lie but I would have said anything to get on that flight. It wasn't to be
The airlines can get fined by Thailand customs if they carry anyone under the 6 month validity passport rule

Tezza is spot on! My buddy and I were supposed to meet in Korea last year (we had the same connecting flight to BKK) and he got sent away at LAX and it cost him a day and a half, as he only had 4 months of validity on his yank passport!

I stay at both Town Lodge and Swiss Grottino when I am in town. I like Town Lodge for the cheaper price, quiet location, convenience of a nice bar downstairs and the friendly staff. Downside is no elevator, a long walk to Sukhumvit/BTS, sometimes you have to wait for a taxi and the rooms are on the smaller side, when I need a change....
The Grottino has much larger rooms, a 2 minute walk to Soi Cowboy and steps from the BTS (to get to Nana Plaza and everywhere else) and overaccomodating staff. Also a Family Mart and two 7-11's literally a stone's throw away, restaurant on ground floor and getting a taxi is never a problem. Downside is it's a little pricer and sometimes some street noise in the am.
Can't go wrong with either place, both places are uber-girl friendly, great managers, free internet. You're also bound to run into fellow forum members and both are great places to start off with a few beers before the night's festivities.

Majestic Suites is quite nice and just around the corner from Nana Entertainment Plaza (NEP).
Within walking distance of Eden Club too.
