My trick and getting the little buggers to leave me alone is a simple, but very effective one. Buy one item from the first kid that come sup to you. Then don't open it, and leave it in plain view. When the next and next and next and next ones come up to you, just show tham that you have just recently purchased something. It usually gets them on their way, without making a scene or making them feel bad.

IMHO Purchasing anything is helping exploitation of children or animals.

Profits go to adults (be it the mafia, parents or their 'caretakers') who control these children.

I don't want to be guilty of exploitation in any way!

Ok Dr. L.

Let's mug em then.... Just kidding.. (no pun intended)

Seriously, I think maybe the best thing to do in that case would be to buy them a sandwich or a burger, or some fruit and make certain they eat it...

Whenever I see someone begging on the street here in Germany I don't give em cash I buy some food and give it to them..

TC has it right, buy the little guys something to eat, they love it because these kids are not stupid, they know what's going on. Kids who are 'worked' are like kids any where. If you give em something the adults can't get, they love it.

Works anywhere for any culture, and man do they remember you.

Just dress up like Michael Jackson. That'll keep 'em away. They'll definitely get the hint and beat it if you don't want to be bothered.

Unless of course if the boss man comes along after you walk away and smacks that McDonald's cheeseburger out of their mouth and says "GET BACK TO WORK!!!"

I am in Katmandu (ok it is not LOS, but somehow the topic is similar) one day walking the streets and this -about 9 year old- kid comes and starts trying to engage me in conversation asking me where I am from. I try to ignore him and keep walking.

But here he is going saying: Are you from France -Paris? Are you from Italy -Rome? Are you from England - London? Are you from Greece -Athens? Every time the kid mentions a country he follows with the capital. By now I am curious and stop and ask him if he knows every capital in the world? He says yes. Now I am curious and really decide to give it a try and test how much he knows?

I start asking: Holland? The Hague. Austria? Vienna. Argentina? Buenos Aires? Turkey? Ankara. Portugal? Lisbon. Damn! The kid really knows. I keep going after what I think would be more difficult ones for a child in Nepal. Cuba? Habana. Jamaica? Kingston. South Africa? Pretoria. Zimbawe? Harare. Iceland? Reyjkiavik. Egypt? Cairo. Mongolia? Ulan Bator. Uruguay? Montevideo. Nigeria? Lagos. He knew them all! Eventually I ran out of countries I knew myself. I started asking him about countries I wasnt sure about like Estonia, Uzbekistan etc.... and each time he answers what I thought was right -he had no way to know if I knew or not.

After 10 minutes or so of this game I am so pleasantly impressed -besides having been entertained- that I thought the kid deserved some money. Now came the second surprise... when he saw I was going to hand him some money.... he then told me that he didn't want money. But that if I wanted to help him, that he would like me to buy him a can of powedered milk for his younger brothers. Now, after saying that, the kid really broke any reluctance I had to helping him. I walked with him into a small store and bought him the milk as well as other food stuff. I ended up spending probably 40 times more than any tip I may have given him initially..... Looking back, one may cynically venture that knowing all those capitals is part of his act into tricking people to buy him food. And that he gets people to spend more this way buying him food that he later resells. I do not know. I prefer to believe that that was not the case, but even if it was... damn me! the kid deserves it just for putting the effort to learn every capital in the world.
