I stayed 4 days in BKK and a (seperate) weekend on Koh Samui, but then I was also spending 2.5 weeks in Singapore and the pacific flight was covered by work.
4 days was enough to scratch the surface of BKK, see just the biggest sites. I'm not the big city type so I won't be spending much more time in BKK. However, if I decide to do some serious girl hunting I'll be taking 1-2 weeks in Phuket or KS.
I took 2-3 days to really get over the jet lag. I recommend getting in late and going straight to sleep, that will put you on the right schedule from the start.

I stay almost a month each time I go to LOS and find it is enought, I would not really like to stay there all the time...

Tiger, the smell is really bad at the coastal cities like Pattaya and Phuket because all of the squid fishing boats. It will take you 1 month to get used to the smell.

Regarding the smell - it's terrible, no doubt, but you will forget all about it once you have a few beers in you and a gorgeous girl to chat with. I didn't think the smell was as bad in Phuket as it was in BKK. It was pretty awful walking through the night market in Patpong, where the smell seemed to be trapped underneath the vendor tarps. I don't think the dirty river helps with the situation either.
Tiger, glad to hear you extended your trip, good decision.

Forever would be ideal, but seriously at least 2 weeks. But I think 20-25 days is ideal. I like the triple 7
Seven Phuket, seven Pattaya, seven Bangkok.
IMOP you gotta have at least 5 in Bangkok.

Brother CalEden has a thing about squids, don't sweat it.
If you're on a work schedule, take 10 days, grab the holiday as well, ( Memorial day, for instance). Start the Friday before, with the weekends you'll end up with 17 days. Spend the weekend in Bangkok, head down to Pattaya on Monday. Sit still for a week, maybe go to Koh Samet for the weekend, lie around in a bungalow on the beach with your TGF from Pattaya, go back to Pattaya on Monday, decide whether to fly down to Phuket for a week, (one hour flight), or just hang out around walking street. I typically go back to Bangkok on Saturday morning, stay up all night Saturday, get on the plane, wiped out, gin soaked, and otherwise completely satiated, take a pill and sleep the entire way home.
IMHO- Phuket is nice enough, though for a short vacation, Pattaya/Bangkok will be just enough.
If you do hang out in Freelancer bar though, the boredom will certainly drive you back home within a week.

What do you mean by boredom? Is it useless to frequent freelancer bars and if so, why?
I absolutely love big city nightclubs that play techno and have all kind of strobe lights bouncing around. I wouldn't want to have every night in this type of atmosphere, but a few would be ok.
