Travel light, though you will need a suitcase going back, for all the crap you will have bought.

I normally take a carry on only, going home is another story though, I always take 6 BIG boxes with me when I return to Canada at 35 Kilos each, it is a hell of a lot of work packing all of that throught the airport.
Last time I was in LOS I started my trip in Hong Kong on Cathay pacific flight heading for India. I almost puked when I got on the plane.
Instead of peanuts why don't they give out right guard?

If this is your first trip you not want to spend precious time trying to shop for necessities?
I take one checked bag and one carry-on.
In my checked bag, I have all I need for the trip.
Enough clothes for about 5 days. It's very hot and humid, so you may be changing a few times a day.
T shirts, shorts, long pants, one set of nice clothes for the high-so club scene, walking shoes, dress shoes, sandals. Toiletries and condoms (bring your own).
The odds of your suitcase being lost are pretty slim, and you won't have to wait too long to pick it up at the baggage carousel.
It seems I overpack by this forums standard, but I've got better things to do than clothes shopping!

I learned to travel light from trekking through Europe via Eurail. I only bring one bag with me for a month in LOS:
sunglasses
sun tan lotion
7 pair underwear
7 pair sox
8 T-Shirts, 2 plain 6 printed
4 dress shirts
3 pair pants
2 pair swim shorts
box of condoms (super large economy size)
bottle of multi-vitamins
travel book
thai bar phrasebook (girls love it, great for conversation)
disposable camera
umbrella
assorted toiletries
3 packs Listerine Breath Strips
At the airport duty-free shop, I buy a box of fine cigars, a bottle of Macallan Scotch, and a bottle of cologne.
If I plan on purchasing some suits, I'll bring dress shoes.

I picked it up at the book store on lower Suk, near the Landmark, but across the street. It's called "The English-Thai Bar Guide: Bar Girl Small Talk..." published by Bangkok Books. It cost 195, and fits in your shirt pocket.
Truely, a 'must have' for any serious punter. Great for conversation in gogo bars, the girls get a big kick out of it. One nearly fainted when she read the entry for "Chan yang borisut" (I'm still a virgin).
My favorite is "Khuen nee phom yaak nawn kap phuuying see khon, mee panhaa mai?" (I want to sleep with four girls tonight, is that OK with you?) Another good one is "Mee phuuying lai khon, tae phuak khao rak phom." (I have many women, but they all love me).
I try to memorize some of the juicy phrases on the flight.
