I believe JackRabbit answer all but one of your questions. Here's my answers!!
1. GT is the place if you want to hang out with members of the forum, as well as ex-pats.
2. I've never stayad at the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, so I'm not sure.
3. No place is ever too close to the action. Look at Landmark hotel. One side of the hotel is so close to nana plaza if you could open your window and spit you could hit hte people in teh crowd!!! ha ha ha!!
4. Would be cool to play a round of golf, but won't be in bkk during the same time.

I've stayed at Baiyoke Sky Tower....plenty og guys seen with 'ladies of the night' so they do let them in. Whether they charge extra for them I don't know.
The hotel lobby is just too hectic for me, too many people who don't stay there milling around. I had a Junior suite, very nice, reasonably priced and good service.

Abrak, hang out doesn't mean 'live there'.
Hang out means, drift through, connect, meet up with, check out, or other wise locate other members so that they can plan to go elsewhere.
Where they end up is a multiple choice question, but like all things in life, you have to start from somewhere.
