I find those beliefs to be more common in Europe. Many also believe they will catch a cold by walking barefoot over a cold floor or by walking around without a shirt and being exposed to wind currents.
Taxi drivers in some European countries do not like to turn on the air-con during the summer -besides believing it saves them lots in fuel, many think that breathing air-conditioned air can not be good for their health.

Can the virus be spread through a central air condition system, e.g. in a hotel? I stayed some days in a hotel with a central ac/system. I remarked that quite a lot of persons were sneezing and coughing there.
I always strongly disliked the ac/systems.
In BKK I find it difficult to sit anywhere outside a permanent wind stream of some fan near you or in your back.

You are quite right. I dont want to sacrifice my days of vacation staying in Bed with a cold instead with a beautiful Thai lad. But if it gets worse, I guess that I dont have another chance : (

I find that AirCon seems to irritate symptoms already present, and that further I know I have developed a sore throat from it. Ane explanation for this that seemed to make sense was that the recycled air is dryer, and harsher on the throat membranes. I usually find that it is better not to set it to freeze dry, and to leave it a relatively ambient temperature of 23-24 degrees.

Latino99: Getting back to your original question of what you can do about your cold, take care of it immediately. Drink lots of water and OJ (this means no alcohol), and get as much sleep as possible (take some medication if you have to). Reduce the AC in your room to a bearable temp.
It's better to stay in your room and sacrifice a day or two of your vacation and knock out the cold completley, than to struggle through beer/gogo bars and nightclubs with your cold and be miserable the whole time. You may think you are losing time here but trust me it's the best way to go about it. If anything, invite a girl over and spend your time sleeping with her (10+ hrs sleeping for her - No Problem! ). Sleep - Sleep - Sleep!!!
I have gotten sick on many a trip (self induced of course) and I just rest until fully (or 90%) recovered, usually a day or 2. Its a combination of temparature, running around, drinking too much, not eating healthy enough, lack of sleep, and exerting yourself too much that will push you over the edge.

Thanks for the advice. I took some aspirine and echinacea, slept for about 12 hours and avoided any physical efforts (so no girls and no walking innecessarily around). As a matter of fact, I feel better now. I have meanwhile moved from BKK to Koh Samui to relax here for bout 6 days. By 20 of april I will be back in BKK, hopefully in full condition.
If I really got over the cold within 3 days I think I can consider me lucky. Normally these things can last a week or even longer depending on the sort of the virus

Finally found something in a local drugstore in Koh Samui which helped. It is a combination medicament with the name "Actifed". It is an anti-histamine which contains the sonamed "pseudoephedrine" as a component.
It really worked and provided a quick relief.
However, I have to add some words of a warning:
The pills were sold without any leaflets or prescription hints (singled out of the package). I asked for the drug information leaflet which was handed out to me so that I could take a look. As I expected the stuff can have several unwanted side-effects which are not to be neglected. In many countries these combination drugs are therefore not admitted. One should be carefull with taking them.
2 years ago I made a similar experience in Bresil. Over there, when one has got a cold, it is quite common to take a similar combination drug (black and orange pills) which are sold without prescription. These contain an antihistamine combined with vitamin C and coffein. They provide a quick relief (at least one feels better) but are not really recommendable. The antihistamine slows you down and makes you dizzy and the coffeine pushes you up to outbalance it. As the effect of the coffeine dissapears quicklier one is very tired in the end.

Sometimes laying around and medicating yourself can be a downward spiral.
Give yourself a VIP room from 3pm to midnite in any tier 1 massage parlour, wear the provided Hefner style bath robe and slippers all day, have 2 big meals, do 2-3 "rounds" (order warm and hot water only). I bet you'll feel better. (or perhaps you'll die.... but I'd bet on a complete recovery)
