Have a little knowledge (which is always dangerous) of some of the places:
Piano (Soi Eckamei) is reportedly (still) one of the top places and is frequented by mostly Thais. There are many falangs as well. Membership is not required but I think you would not like to go (a) without a member (b) on your own (c) unless you speak some Thai reasonably well. You won't have any problems per se, but most of the girls really only speak a little english and the mamasans probably wouldn't be extremely helpful - although they are all nice. If you do still want to go on your own, ask for mamasan - Kim. Her english is quite good. Sit at the bar, listen to the music and watch all the lovelies that will be there waiting for their appointments.
Pent is newer on Wireless opposite Hilton hotel. A bit wilder but also a bit of a younger Thai crowd than Piano. They have a pretty good bar area and it is mostly the same set up as Piano but bigger. Ask for mamasan Nok. Her english isn't very good but she has the girls pretty well lined up with different levels of english.
Pegasus - lotsa stuff in the BTF to cover you... easiest of all to get lucky (no luck needed).
Orbit - again, plenty of details here. Ask for Mamasan Kwan. She is pretty good for arranging english speaking ladies. She will try to get you to buy the membership though. Prices start at BT 20,000.
Forte - good place - reincarnated from the older (and IMO better joint on soi 24). Similar to Pent but smaller. Recently had one of the most beautiul girls ever join me for the evening. Barely any english ability and with my superior thai knowledge, arranged to spend the entire evening with her repeating "huh?" to everything I said. Mamasan Tum was resposible for this connection.
As RTB stated, better to be with a group and with someone who can speak Thai.
As far as I know, none of the establishments above have in-house cobblers in the event you wear the wrong spats for the evening!
