In our part of the world, people like to hear the bell because of getting to enjoy another drink and drinking with friends.
Here in Thailand it's simply a matter of profit and another 40 baht.... nobody cares about friends or the drinks themselves.

Yes, agree with you DrLove, if the intention of ringing the bell is to con oneself that everyone in the bar thinks you are "BMOC", you would be better spending that money on your own drinks and extend the inner illusion...
But there are times when you are with a group of people and its just a moment of fun....

as I mentioned earlier in this thread, some of us, like me, enjoy the idea of ringing the bell so we can all have another and the comradery is definitely there.
The BGs getting a drink too is just a sideline attraction...for them
until they are all pissed as well, then it can be great fun !!

Last trip was in Jools bar Soi Nana for an afternoons quaffing, great group of 'freinds' the crack was going well, lots of piss taking, plenty of bell ringing.
One guy who was a bit short of cash would after every bell drink, send over a return drink to the bell ringer. He came over with my drink and said he could not afford to buy the whole bar drinks, but did not want to be a Cheap Charlie so always bought back.
I followed the same principle in FLB Pattaya it was a party night and a group were ring like mad, I went over and stood them a round. Their comment was that they were having fun and thanks, as there were a lot of cheap charles who were not buying.
To my mind if you choose to ring the bell in a bar full of punters, don't expect a drink back. In that way you won't be dissapionted. Mind you if you wondered how many people it takes to run a bar just ring the bell.

Agree with Isee about doing a quick BG count before ringing the bell. Was in the a-gogo where my TGF used to work last week (still lots of family and friends there). We ordered bottles of Tequila and proceeded to get the entire joint drunk. Took a couple of hours (man oh man those ladies can drink), but we finally suceeded. So around 10:30 pm we hit the bell, so the ladies and punters alike could get their choice of booze. Later we had the DJ switch to Isaan music and the place came alive as we all danced Isaan-agogo style in the aisles for the next hour or so.
Not sure what the fellow punters in the bar thought of all this, but we all went home pretty buzzed (and two BG casualties -- both down for the count puking in the toilet in the backroom -- had to pay the b/f for one so she could go upstairs to pass out, lol). But sanuk mahk!
I know the cashier so she showed me the total before ringing the bell. She also kept me informed during this 6 hour drunken revelry of our ongoing tab (not small). But was definitely fun to be smashed and dancing with an entire ago-go. Something I won't repeat until my wallet recovers, lol!
