Obviously a novel will dramatise a story. Fact is Stranger then fiction ! Big Dave has never come across to me with an attitude that Thai ladies are recepticles for his 'Jizzm' . In fact I believe he has just married a Thai lady- Good Luck Dave ! The story is a compilation of many such events and is a warning to be careful. There are a lot of very nice BG's and Go-Go's out there and a few very bad ones. Something about one rotten apple ...etc etc etc. I think if they played down the money game a little(via e-mails) and stopped telling whoppers about the dead buffalo-I think people may be happier all round. There again there is no welfare/social security in Thailand...There lies another story..I wonder IF ???????

Thank you for your direct-experience comment regarding one of the characters from the story. You further reinforce the "take it with a grain (perhaps a pinch) of salt" sentiment that a majority of posters have expressed. It does appear that the "one bad apple" syndrome serves as a motivation for writing, too. Perhaps the ultimate, extended conclusion is that Thailand would ideally create a retirement system for its citizens.

i read somewhere stephen leathers short c.v.
it said he was prompted towrite the book after living in BKK for a while and meeting a BG and experiencing many of the things portrayed in the book.
i think some is fact with little embellisments here and there with local colour and a few stories he had heard thrown in.

I read it. It was a decent read. I like the way you got the story from all perspectives.
I was just annoyed at the main character because he seemed completely brain dead.

I've just stumbled over this thread, and I think it is just *great* and probably one of the best threads so far in this forum...
Many thanks to CJ, MrJoe, hooomyy, Groundpounder, etc. and especially to the Tunnel Rat for their thoughtful and vey well informed postings. I've really enjoyed to read through their contributions a lot.
"Private Dancer" is indeed a great novel, not only written in a formally interesting way, but also transporting a lot of wisdom and experience about the BG scene in Thailand in a very condensed way. After starting with the book I could not finish until completion and I did read it in one session...
Stephen Leather says that this book (although still unpublished) is clearly his favourite work, and it is the only one that he has reread more then one time - this guy has obviously poured some heart's blood into this opus...
There is a high risk for every western man with little experience in whores or for somebody who only knows the jaded, distorted and broken characters that most of the western prostitutes are. A high risk when he comes to LOS and meets the apparently "warm" and "friendly" BGs for the first time, to then become another "Pete" and to go through the nightmares that Stephen Leather had described so well in "Private Dancer".
I would really opt for handing out a printed version of "Private Dancer" at BKK airport to every visitor arriving in LOS for the first time...

I loved this book also.
Books about life on the boundaries of society in the LOS are kind of hard to find in the states. You generally have to pay full price at an online site like Amazon. Once in a while you might find a title on an auction site.
Are these Books more available in BKK? So far I have only experienced what I could find as downloadable .pdf files. Which are on your favorite reading list?

Another newbie Spaz missive!
