Two things, first being probably good for general newbies, and the second being really weird but you will see...
First, I followed with interest the thread about Foodland being reopened apparently in a more convenient location for us Mongers. My question is, is Foodland the place to go for the toothpaste, toothbrush, etc., type materials that I will need to buy rather soon after exiting the plane? Or would there be a more logical place for this? I am presuming that I will be a walking zombie when I arrive, so I want to simply go straight to the right place and get back to the room and collapse.
Second, what is a vacation if you can't pig out on all the junk food you don't normally eat due to health issues, etc? So, Ice Cream in Bangkok, is there somewhere to go and places NOT to go, with regard to Ice Cream? I ask because in my reading about the food of Thailand, sweets seem to be rather uncommonly mentioned. Maybe that's why Thailand is the "Land of Smile", they haven't rotten their teeth eating ice cream and candy?

Thais LOVE ANYTHING WITH SUGAR. Your familiar ice cream chains are here: Baskin-Robbins, Swensons, Buds. I just wouldn't suggest buying ice cream from a street vendor, margins are slim and in this heat it's too risky.
Can get your toiletries at any 7-11, all over and open 24 hours.

For day-to-day needs, 7-11 will do fine. No need to go down to Soi 5.
However, if you need imported stuff, Foodland (and Villa in Soi 11) will be your choice.
Regarding ice cream, stick to familiar ice cream parlors like Swensens, Baskin Robbins and Hagen Dasz. Even McDonald will be fine.
But refrain from buying ice cream from carts on the street.

Focus on enjoying the truly local stuff, instead of just pigging out on stuff you can get at home.
In terms of toiletries, there's plenty of possibilities - 7/11 (also known as just "seven" or "seh-vayn") will do in a pinch, if you aren't picky. Personally, I usually head down to a local Boots or Watsons (also usually within walking distance along Sukhumvit), or Villa Market and Foodland. The advantage of 7/11 is that they are open 24/7, and you will find them nearly everywhere.
I like specific products, but I solved the problem by just having a regular girl pick them up for me, and then meet me in my hotel upon arrival.

Foodland is open 24/7 too. There is one on Sukhumvit Soi 5 (which just re-opened) and another at Sukhumvit Soi 16.

... when you see them on the menu, try them... especially the mango & sticky rice.
