GS and JayH, there is fun to be had in Patpong for sure. Avoiding rip-off places is simple: do not climb any stairs unless it it a Kings Group bar (has "Kings" or 'Queens" in the name.
The street-level gogos are OK.

A good friend of mine still owns the Crown Royal on Patpong 2. A good drinking bar that had some nice looking talent a few months ago. Just behave yourself when you go in there. They will brook no nonsense.
I used to spend lots of time on Patpong and sat in for Rick Menard for a period of time when he went on vacation. Rick sold to the King's Group and it has never been the same since.
Udom died a 4-5 years ago, as did Cliff McNeill, the long time owner of Chicken Devine on Patpong 2.
The Madrid is still open and still serving the best SOS in town.
You can still have fun on Patpong. You just need to work your way through all those stinking stalls and find your niche.

I like Patpong. My observation is that in the good sized bars (King's Castle, Queen's Castle, etc...), the average weight of the girls is lower than in Nana. Fewer fat chicks.
Also, the beers/lady drinks are 20-30 bahts cheaper. If you enjoy the go-go environment (which I do), a full night's drinking will save 300-500 bahts per night.

No difference in terms of ratio of hotties vs. notties. The Nana go-go's usually have no more than 20-30% of hotties, about 20-30% of okay-looking, and the rest are just not attractive.
But in Nana/Cowboy, there's higher portion of fatties. Nothing worse, IMO, than a cute face on a fattie. Makes you wish for the might-have-been's.

Expatchuck: See that you have been around for quite a while.
I am sure you know Bobby of Bobby's Arms. Since 1975, his business does well enough.
Burmese Frank lost the Superstar some years back and is now working hard to make his Noriega's Jazz Club (on Silom Soi 4) into a really nice venue.
Madrid and Crown Royale: great places.
Sure hope all these establishments survive Thaksinism.

I haven't seen Bobby in years. The last time was in the Crown Royal as a matter of fact.
I still hang out some with Ian from the old Superstar but none of the others except some customers like myself.
The CR has always closed at 0100 so the change of hours didn't affect it that much. It will take a nuke to bother the Madrid.

That's probably the best advice on this thread. I did get severly overcharged for a drink on my first visit to Patpong by not taking heed of advice like that.
What's most unique about Patpong is the open air bars and watching all the tourists go through. While Nana is for the most part European/North American dominated you can have a beer at an open air bar in Patpong and see people from all over the world getting a kick out of what I like to think is BKK's answer to Times Square; an attraction that doesn't represent the city as it really is at all.
And when you're ready to leave, you can have the company of a lady or two......Times Square doesn't offer that anymore.
So go but don't follow touts anywhere.

Many "stunners' at Patpong bars are LB's. So keep your eyes open, ask lots of questions and be very sure before you take anyone home LT or ST.

The ratio of LB's in Patpong aren't any different than Nana. There are exclusively LB bars, and there are a few LB's sprinkled in the regular places.
The only real difference to me is that you have to wade through a lot more tourists.
