I get charged between $1.50 to $3.50 (depending on ATM, I guess), withdrawal fee from ATMs in Thailand. This is no different than the ATM fees charged by banks in the US, so I do not factor that into my exchange rates calculations. Based on my withdrawals, the exchange rate calculated comes out very favorably to exchange rates given by local banks in Thailand (I check this usually within a few days of the transaction). I have not seen any reason to be concerned, so far.

Quote: from Tyfon on 12:35 am on Jan. 30, 2006 I aggree though, you have to check the small print on your bank's terms and conditions before travelling. With online banking nowadays it's not a big deal to check your transactions after a few days to make sure your not being screwed over and thus avoiding any nasty surprises when you get home.
You can pull out your money and walk to the next internet shop and check the rate. Posts to my account immeidately. Looks like the I.S.C. is 1% of the amount withdrawn. I pulled out $250 and my fee is $2.44. I pull out $150 I was charged $1.44. Convenience, convenience, convenience. Way better than T.C. and Cash. LS

Convenience? Maybe. But not a better net exchange rate than TC's after all fees (assuming you can get the TC's without a purchase fee). Of course, if your ATM card is lost or stolen, then what do you do? If you had TC's they will be replaced in a day or so.

Sore hand? OK, you got me on that one. I was assuming that most people are not that lazy and could actually have enough of an attention span to sign their name consistently.

Actually as other have stated the ATM gives the same or better exchange rates than TC's. Traveler checks are a hassle to convert, sometime some places are picky about your signature and then they have to call in the number many a times. Expect about a 15 minute tranaction time. Regarding lost checks. I lost a bunch of mine a couple of years ago at the LAX airport. These were American Express TC. It took a week to get replacements. I also had an AMEX card break in half after put through one of those old fashion manual charge machines. It took a day to get a replacement card. I have had friends either have ATM/VISA cards lost or stolen in Thailand. Usually they could arrange delivery of replacement cards via FedEx by one week.

Not after you take into account the fees the banks charge for using ATMs that don't belong to them and/or fees for the foreign exchange conversion. I never spent 15 minutes cashing a TC. Never.

I have at least two ATM cards. One in the safe and one with me at all times. Not a problem about losing the card. LS

ATM is the way to go. On my first visit I was with a friend. He had TC's which took 10-15 minutes to cash and I had my ATM card which took 5 minutes or less. Then again, he was carrying around more money than all my accounts put together. The daily ATM limit (something like 15,000 THB) seemed like it might be a problem but it never really hurt me and it kept my spending in check. You can avoid many of the ATM fees by opening an account with a US bank that doesn't charge ATM fees and pays you back for fees other banks charge (yes, they exist).

I always us an ATM.... I have an Internet Bank.. I have never seen it! They will give me $6.00 a month refund for ATM transactions. So.. I can go to ANY BANK anywhere in the world... no ATM fees (if cost is under $6). I did leave my card in an ATM in BBK... no problem.. just got on line and reported the card lost. It was immediately canceled. I had a spare ATM card from another bank to use.
