I always make a freelancer leave her ID with the front desk.........saves any hassle and never had any as a result after numerous visits to LOS.
Never met a girl who wasn't happy to comply, always lock any valuables up in the safe before leaving my room at night so really nothing worth pinching would be on show anyway on returning with guest.
The odd person is bound to have a bad experience but I fing Thailand a pretty safe place to go...more so than a lot of other countries. The idea of a money clip above something I subscribe to as well, always a good idea to have small notes to hand as well as to not flash a wad. Sometimes keep my bigger cash in my shoe/ trainers and slip a note out when needed discreetly.
Only thing I ever had pinched was a mobile telephone by a taxi driver who helped me out of the cab after a pretty serious session. only a phone, they get nicked everywhere....had the same happen in Amsterdam, Dublin etc. never too good with them.
The only thing I've ever been hassled by when walking alone is very attractive ladeez...can handle that  Learned to take a wide berth when walking past Katoeys and not to make eye contact.

I have done more than my fair share of walking back sois pissed late at night over many years.
I have been stopped by the police on a number of occassions but they have usually been interested in seeing if I was carrying drugs rather than ripping me off.
One of my buddies dropped a cigarette one night and zoom, two cops come screaming out of the night on a motorbike. One produced a pre written speech in English on littering and how we would have to come to the station to pay 1,000 Baht.
I almost pissed myself laughing. The cops started giggling as well as they were probably off duty and just cadging a few baht. The fact they did not have radios was a good indication.
200 Baht and off they went, probably to the pub.
I was also assaulted with a wet lettuce once but this was in broaddaylight.
The katoeys have tried to get close a number of times but I always fend them off as their rough hands could do damage to my sensitive parts (my wallet).
Bangkok is incredibly safe for a third world city with a massive poor underclass.

that was also very common in places around Olongopo (Subic Bay) PI.
It was ill advised to go to the gal's place for the first time at night, cause she may have had her PBF waiting under the bed to rifle thru your pants while you were shagging his squeeze.
BTW, they would have a Manila Folder (Balisong, butterfly knife) on them as well, in case it got messy...

I would say anywhere in Nigeria (Lagos/Port Harcourt et al) is unsafe! lol We had armed guards with us 99% of the time......lovely place
How about Atyryu (maybe spelt it wrong) in Kazakhstan - Another fine work place of mine lol I never left the hotel! Heard it was bad for mugging there so........mind you it was december at the time, thick snow about -40 C with the wind chill factor... brrrr!
