lookk for obvious signs initially. big hands and feet, tall "girls", wide shoulders, adams apple, walk and or talk extra femine. and of course, extra package down below.
for a newbie, it's usually better when travel in a pack or with a few veteran. Ladyboys are people too. Just be nice to them, say thanks but no thanks if and when they walk towards you, and nothing bad would happen. I think there are a lot more ladyboys and shows in Pattaya then Bangkok.

Assuming you are staying around Sukhumvit, I'll chime in with what's worked well for me. First, the heat can be daunting, and the traffic is murderous, so I've learned to stay close to the action, like at the Nana hotel or the Raumchitt Plaza,(upstairs from the Thermae,and why doesn't anybody talk about this little treasure??). Anyway the 6 or 7 blk., crawl is just right for me Thermae, Soi 7 beergarden, and Nana Hotel Disco, and NEP, and Grace Hotel within walkin distance, and if my legs are wobbly from exertion, then 20baht for the motobike taxi. Don't worry about your experience level the girls will zone in on your pulse and guide you along, and before you know it you'll be writin back giving the newbies advice yourself. Big D you might disagree but I typically go with 1000baht s/t-2 for l/t. Though I must admit I've gotten away with 500 s/t around 5:30AM with street girls on Sukhumvit. Keep all valuables in the hotel safe, have fun, be polite, and you'll have no problems.
