But if you bargain them down to acceptable levels, you might then say you didnt overpay.

There are two ways to get a taxi from the airport. Go out from the arrival hall and stand in line and get a taxi "the official" one. This costs 400 baht to Suk. No meter is used and the fare is specified by the people arranging the taxi for you. The other way is to go up and flag down a taxi. At the suggestion of others on this board, what I do is this. I come out of the arrival hall, walk past all the touts offering taxis and tours, go up the escalator on the far end to the departures lounge (2 floors above the arrivals). There I step outside and flag a taxi down - one that has just dropped off passengers. There is a cop there whose job is to make sure taxis dont stop to pick up people, but this is never a problem. These drivers are eager to go with the meter because otherwise, they would either have to go around and down to the arrivals section or go back empty to town. With the metter, it should be around 150 baht + tolls if you take the tollway (2 tolls; 70 baht, I think).

Yes Sliderman, when there are quite a few taxi's unloading you can catch one farthest away from the cop sitting on his chair, departure level and the foreign exchange booth on that level is also less crowded.

excuse me?..no meter is used??
Sounds like they heard you coming...meter is certainly used on the 'official' taxi queue, you just pay a 50B excess for the priviledge.
Depends on how much baggage I have as to whether I go up to departures. The 'cop' will often take the 50B from the taxi driver if he's given him some waiting time in his view.

Sometimes when the taxi pulls away and you are an obvious tourist he will not put the flag down and then tell you 300BT.
You have to refuse or bargain or pay the 300 to Suk. thats why last couple of times I found the departure level less hassle.
For 400BT you would expect to get a HJ too.

you must be in a different part of los. if you get a taxi from the arrivals area and wait in the que, you will pay the extra 50 baht plus meter, always meter, never even had one in that que express the slightests interest in saying no meter. The fare to Suk should be around 150 to 200, depending where on Suk, plus tolls, 40 and 30 I think from memory, so if your paying 400, foolish boy. If you go up to departure, which I usually do depending on luggage, you can get a drop off and they have not as yet ever charged me the extra 50, I usually do this because I like a new taxi, I figure if I am paying for ride, may as well get new and quality rather than some of the buckets of sh_t. If you do this upstairs, you can wait till a new one comes along, maybe 2 minutes. If you take one down stairs you are obliged to take next in line, dead and buried or not.
You can also get the private taxis downstairs, these are usually arranged by the touts inside the arrival haal and they will sting you up to 800b, maybe this is what you meant when you paid the 400 and no meter.

Slight detail addition to my post, I usually get in at 1:00am-2:am time frame, they don't drop the flag without an argument.
Hence, departure level, never pay tolls, road clear all the way, and never paid the 50 surcharge either.
Never been asked for 400.
