I defended him so much because I asked a similar question (jokingly) and got a load of grief.
It was a stupid question, but why can't people lighten up a bit?
At least the question made you laugh, which means you're not completely deviod of a personality. Laughter and ridicule was probably the initial intention anyway, but once you get all these smug, arrogant responses, you feel like justifying yourself. Well, I did anyway.
