Oh and cheers to you, GP. I'm surprised if the content has prevented publication, considering the things that have been published about LOS previously. Having said that, I am of course even more eager to read it. I shall start tomorrow I think. To all brothers re: Books about BGs etc; There is a book called "A Woman of Bangkok" which was one of earliest examples of the genre (perhaps the first); A young British man is sent here by his firm and meets a beautiful charming and brilliantly manipulative BG: Drama ensues. It is excatly like a hundred true stories I've seen. It takes place about 50 (or more?) years ago. Surprised? The woman is a "rent-a-dance girl" and the time is before Patpong and Cowboy. The story was quite good but the remarkable thing was the fact that I was reading it in '84 (?) and the story seemed like a current one.

Mr. Joe: I loved "A Woman of Bangkok" too, and found it surprisingly erotic in the understated prose of the time. In contrast, "Private Dancer" brings you right up to date in no uncertain terms - a whole different ball game!

GP, Surprisingly, your the first person I can recall who knows the book. I haven't seen it in ages. Do you know if it's in print?

BTW: It's been close to 20 years since I've read it but I remember being impressed by how I found myself (at least partly) forgiving the BG and blaming the weak and naive falang. (Just as I often do in real life situations--don't tell anyone.) I thought presenting the BG in that way was not only quite enlightened of the author but also realistic.

Never read the book that this thread is about, but did exchange emails with the author of Patpong Sisters about 1995 or so.. seemed very reasonable by email.. I discussed the differences between the play for pay scene in Bkk compared to SF .. Another book if you can find it is "Dogmouth gets the blues" .. I met the woman that this book was written about. She comes from a wealthy family and is an MD and more than a bit looney .. interesting, quick read .. hard to find this book, but worth a look .. Asia books sold it at one time, but you might be able to find in a used book store??

OT, I probably shouldn't have said anything. There's no reason why she wouldn't seem reasonable. I was just struck, at the time with how caught up in the scene (and her BF) she was. And she was a party girl.

MJ, I was not really responding to you .. more in response to CJ who referred to feminazis ... they tend not to be reasonable

The gist of CJ's post is true though, in that she had a fairly militant feminist outlook when she arrived and was quite disdainful of the BG scene but later... I had the chance to meet her shortly after her arrival (someone arranged a meeting where she asked for some assistance in getting contacts and background for her book.) and then much later. She definitely seemed to have changed. She liked to have fun. She liked the sexy Thai guys. She liked the ladies too.
