The only rule I observe about fighting in Thailand is DON'T. Why? The odds that it will lead to a loss of face are too high.
Think otherwise? Well then don't be surprised to meet him again a week later with 10 of his cousins tooled up to set things right.
Find yourself in a bad situation - keep thinking, keep smiling, ease yourself out of it (Buy everyone a drink). Chances are you did something stupid to get yourself into that bad situation in the first place anyway.
The moment I hurt a Thai in those circumstances is the moment you'll see me hurtling toward Don Muang and the first plane out of the country....

I read the two thread lines Mr JackRabbit posted. Some serious pain exposed there for a wise man to consider.
Doesn't the home team always have the advantges?
Mr. Minder....get on the team bus and leave town is great advice for those with other homes to go to, but what do you suggest for the guys with no other home to go to, living in Thailand. Thais hate to loose face, but most expats hate to lose period. Solution?

Fastmover, you miss the point - I didn't say to lose - I said not to "fight" as in don't get physical because I believe that way in Thailand you will always lose - sooner or later.
My advice goes double for those who plan to stay long term.

a friend of mine with some boxing experience in the british army fought in thailand. not at a very professional standard, he was just watching a muay thai fight in a bar when there was an invitation put out for anyone to enter. john decided to, it was a once in a lifetime chance. being extremely fit and aggressive in the rig he did better than he thought he would. he just threw left after right after left. straight punches all the way and the local thai lad never got a chance to get started properly. john won his fight after two rounds.
he was asked if he wanted to fight again, this time for decent money (no idea how much, sorry). of course he thought he was jean claude van jackie chan now and accepted. the next fighter was brought in from bangkok and not some local kid with no real experience. john was chopped down with a succession of low kicks and the fight was over within a minute.
i still admire him for having the guts to do it though, and not a drop of alcohol had passed his lips when he decided to step into the ring.
ive recently started training in vale tudo and want to fight, one day (at any level-semi pro/amatuer/anything) but i personally wouldnt fight a thai in thailand.

Vale Tudo , now THAT'S a style that will cause problems
(if learnt correctly) for other styles.

As for fighting a Thai in Thailand in or out of the ring , as has been mentioned previously, you may beat them first, but there will be many more waiting to avenge their buddy's loss of face.

Mr minder...I did not miss your point, I failed to make my point clearly in my question. Sorry.
What I wanted to know is that if a fight TAKES PLACE and the Thai wins, there is no loss of face. If the expat wins, since most hate to lose, and there is an additional price to pay in the future, what should the expat do since his home is the same as the Thais'.
The walk away scenario is admirable, but not always possible or acted on.

bok hah, i cant believe you called the UFC a freakshow. K1 is the freakshow, with bob sapp, butterbean and soon mike tyson fighting. the UFC and PRIDE events are fantastic and are dragging MMA into mainstream sporting life.

Pablo , I think the fighters and styles are excellent in UFC , I don't enjoy the presentation of the videos with has-beens like Bill Wallace and Kathy Long giving their sycophantic views. A few of the contestants have been past their sell-by date but I wouldn't like to meet them in a dark Soi.
K1 sounds like a joke!

K1 can be electrifying, but theyre bringing in the likes of butterbean and tyson to appeal to a wider audience and win over some traditional boxing fans. its a shame as it makes a mockery of the sport.
some of the presentation is over the top and embarrassing, just like with a lot of the big boxing promotions in the states. some of the intros last longer than the fights .. but when they get it right, f_ck me, what a show they can put on.

Fastmover. Lets be clear I am talking about a "street fight" for want of a better name, not ring fighting or muay thai sport.
I know it sounds lame when I seem to be saying "don't fight" - what I am saying is AVOID at all costs every laying hands on a Thai in Thailand in a manner that is or even may be viewed by others as an assault.
Obviously if you are walking down the Soi minding your own business and someone runs up and starts throwing punches the whole AVOID scenario goes out the window. However in Thailand this is unlikely too ever occur. Most times when a "farang" gets into a fight with a local - it is the farang who starts it ñ whether he knows that at the time or not.
I have no trouble believing that Thai's are team players and any passers-by may well join in to support their Team. I can even quote Stickman on that "the general consensus is that we agree with what happened, but that doesn't necessarily make it right... It should be noted by farangs who like a bit of biff that this is what can happen - that pack mentality combined with fierce patriotism of the Thais could mean that one day it is a farang on the other end of it! " (09/11/01 _ Comments on "Angry Mob Kills Armed Kidnapper" where Skytrain patrons beat to death a Thai kidnapper after he stabbed a female University student )
So if I had physically mishandled a local? - I came close at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery with a couple of drunk Thai louts who were behaving badly near a war grave -(we all have things we will not tolerate)
If I did find myself in that situation and needed to settle things down to avoid future problems in my new home - well - and others with a better understanding of Thai culture can correct me - then I would find that Thai persons "pee" or elder at the time of the incident - the person who they answer to under Thai culture - their parent , their employer, their older brother and do my best to smooth things over with that person - explain what had happened and why etc. Only then would I start to feel safe for the long term.
And finally there could be a severe LOSS OF FACE for a Thai were he to assualt someone (farang or otherwise) in circumstances that other Thais felt clearly didn't warrant it. Losing your composure makes you a lesser man, let alone resorting to violence. Remember, "Mai bpen rai" and smile.
Pretty complicated - that's why I'd go with the AVOID approach in the first place.
