Maddog, interesting thread.
Will be in the same situation but my son is shy of being 17. He plans to go in to the army and will almost certainly end up in foriegn lands being enticed by foriegn girls.
I see a trip to Thailand as an ideal field trip, an education to prepare him for whats to come. In this way I can pass on my expirience and explain the ins and outs. Better he learns this way than being presented with the situation and not knowing what to do. No better place to explain the pitfalls and precautions one should take.
Nana plaza is not your average pub in the UK, and TGs are not your average women.
And his mother? What the eye don't see, the heart don't grieve. Although I am going to have a hard time explaining the medical bill to wipe the smile of his face!!!!.

For example if he was going into Artillery those folks left the battle two years ago. The same applies for heavy armor and anti-air. Additionaly a lion's share of the Medical folks are stationed in Kuwait and Baharain.
Most of the troops in Iraq and Afganistan are either Special Forces, Mechnized Infantry, Transportation/Logistics, and Civil Affairs (MPs). In the areas of Transportation/Logistics and Civil Affairs 90% are Reserve/National Guard.
Ironically going Active Duty in the Army and becoming a Medic (That requires 2 years training plus basic) may be the safest thing to do...
Of course if Mushroom is a Canadian then there is a unified service where he can go Air Force or Navy and never fire a shot...

Good points, all. Not saying that one can't set himself with a safe position in the armed forces, if done right (and with the proper protection from knowing the right folks), just that in average those motivated by gung-ho feelings usually do not end up where you pointed.
Just worried about a young guy about to discover LOS, and I would hope he gets to enjoy it many more times --- without any traumatic nightmares waking him.

Ill be 18 when I go to Phuket and Bangkok with my parents, and all I can say is let him experience it. Don't try to be to comfortable with him, let him go and enjoy himself on his own, not sure about how your relationship is with your son, but for me if my dad was WITH my while I was rubbing pussy in a bar I would just be like ummm no. So give him space, and im sure he will find what he wants.

I thought proper child rearing included things like guideing them towards a meaning relationship with someone they could be happy with for the rest of their lives. That includes being there when they have relationships that are good and also for those that are bad. It's a learning experience in male and female personal interaction that never ends.
To expose an 18 year old to the sex monger-Thai prostitute relationship pretty much guarantees he'll have never have a relationship that can develop into something that will last a lifetime because he's been tainted at a young age to believe it's about having an "I'll use you for sex while you use me for my money and that's all" attitude.
Do him a favor and let him experience the Heaven and Hell of "normal" relationships at home. It'll build character. He may just luck out and find someone he happily spends the rest of his life with. You're his father not his friend. Find a friend your own age to monger with.
