I am told only the Immigration police can investigate your immigration status.
However the normal police can demand ID and unless you have a Thai driver's licence or similair you may have difficulty proving this without your passport.
Of course if just popping out to the pub why bother? If they are really concerned you can take them home with you, show them the passport and let them drink your Scotch.
my thai wife says the same, never take my passport out on the piss. Boys in brown want to see it its back in my room come and see it.
They wanna take me down town up to them really but I aint taking it out, its really a personal thing

That it was I was told (by a Police Cpt.) when I first came to Thailand in '96. Only the Immigration Police were allowed to ask to see your passport or ask you to accompany them to a Police Station, unless you are being formally arrested. This followed a spate of robberies and abductions/murders by bogus cops of tourists (mainly Japanese/Chinese) between Don Muang and the City in the mid 90's. Copy ID with photo for a normal cop was sufficient
I don't know about now and of course the reality of life in LOS is very different from the Law (such that it is).

Yeah, well. You are actually required to carry your passport at all times as a tourist. As a resident, your Alien Registration Book is the document to carry (a drivers license is not enough to please the Immigration as it does not say anything about your status in the Kingdom). I made the observation that people who are behaving decent and carrying a copy of their passport (photo page, visa page and last entry stamp and TM card) will be left alone usually, if Immigration is suspicous, they radio the Info back to the records Division adn check it there or take you to your Condo to see the real thing.
I never had my passport on me during the last 8 years in BKK and never was approached by Immigration. But I have head other stories by people who got stopped by plain clothes officers, especially around the Hua Lampong and Kao Sarn Area.
