Just a quick one...
When you refer to getting robbed, you mean by pick pockets or a TG taking something out of your Hotel right? Or are we talking knife to the throat type stuff?

If we are being serious now, being robbed means..
Pickpockets. No real problem. Just be as careful in LOS as I hope you are anywhere else.
Freelancers. If you pick up a girl on the street, disco or freelacer bar, then you should just make sure that your valuables and money are not lying around in your hotel room. If she vanishs with your possessions there is little chance of tracing her.
Gogo's and beer bars. Less likely to be a problem here since you could probably trace her through the bar.
One or two of the bros have told stories of isolated instances with freelances.
Not heard of knife attacks in tourist areas

As a public service, this happy poster will state again.
On second trip, jet lagged drank two days and nights solid, 5AM took freelancer to room, passed out, woke up, no Passport, wallet, credit cards, prescription sunglasses, cash. All valuables. Spent two weeks off and on getting new passport, western union, and creative story telling on the phone to loved ones, police action.
When all was said and done, new passport designates me as Female. No shit. I deserved it all. I neither locked valuables in the safe, (the moral of the story), nor showed common sense in moderating the alcohol intake. I don't think I was drugged, conned, etc. just plain stupid.
Skippy, your personal security concerns are warranted, but seriously, just hook up with some bro's prior to landing, and let um show you around. You'll be fine. Just get your ass over there!

This poor bastard has learned alot, trust me boys.
The ripoff artist I met at the Rainbow 2000, around the corner from Nana Disco. Charged up 4000 USD on credit card in less than a day, at Robinson, Central, and Zen, all within five miles of the hotel. a real fast mover. Nothing quite as sobering as waking up half way around the world with 6 dollars in pocket change, no id, and no way to pay the hotel.
