This is what happened to me last night: Arrival 1:05 A.M. Immigration 1:30 A.M Baggage and Customs 2:10A.M Followed all the other geese outside to catch a taxi and there was one waving at me in the middle of the street. I wasn't sure if I was at the taxi stand, maybe I would have had better luck. I took the advice of the Forum members and this guy had meter-taxi on the roof. Got in the cab, "Nana Tai hotel, soi 3", told him to turn his meter on and he does, so no problem right? Wrong. I think we are driving on the side of what looks to be an expressway and he turns to me and says, "I'll take you highway, 1600 Baht". I was like " No, I'll pay what's on the meter" This back and forth goes on for a good 10-20min. (seemed like it). So, the guy turns off the meter and shows a fare 1544 Baht on the meter. I'm like WTF?? "Why did you turn off the meter". I contemplated getting out of the cab but to where? I'm on the highway in the middle of nomansland, and I thought I wouldn't be able to get another cab. So we agreed on 1300baht, and HE payed the toll (555). LOL, it was a Learning experience. What were my options guys?
1.) Get out of the cab at 2:30 AM
2.) Lie to him then just give him 300baht when I get to the hotel? ( sorry but I'm a man of my word)
3.) Get one of those recipts and write down his information. (I pondered this, but when I finally got to the Hotel I was like F**K it) Ne ways it's his kharma he's messing with.
4.) ?????

First off, sorry you got hau-nched out of 1000 baht.
Second, it is not possible for a normally operating meter to show an even number -- they start at 35 baht and increment by 2's. 1544 does not compute.
What you should have done is to waited until your destination, then sat in the taxi with the door open and ask the hotel doorman to call the Tourist Police (1155).
It should have been pretty obvious from about 6,000 different threads that the taxi stand involves actually walking up to a counter, telling them your destination, getting a slip of paper and giving half of it to the driver.
Your "Faux jai dee" accomplished nothing but to help a scam artist keep his hack license and prey on somebody else next time.
For general reference, the "even meter amount" thing is something to keep in mind to combat another scam. You can trick a taxi meter into reading "888" or "1888"; it involves grounding the display in such a way that all the LED elements come on at once. This was a scam around Patpong a few years ago.

Man, very sorry that this happend to you. I never had any experience like it. Now, here's the answer to avoid future problems:

2) Yes, you must learn to lie in LOS, especially if you have to bullsh_t your way out of a sh_tty situation...then its not a real lie anyway..
3) ALWAYS, get a cab from the Taxi Stand, ALWAYS and nothing will happen. The Taxis are registered at the Airport. You will receive a receipt and surcharge of 50 Baht receipt for the express way. Then pay the taxi upon arrival at your hotel. Total cost should be around 200 baht to 250 baht max. at 2.30am.

WTF? Have you never seen a taxi stand before? Did you get "a card that identifies the cab and driver?" This card was described in several posts above.
Maybe someone needs to post a photo of the taxi stand and the woman in the booth that writes down the cab number, driver id, and your destination on the card.
There were even warnings in the above posts that you would be accosted by people before you reached the taxi stand.

jesus h christ, actually good on the taxi driver for such good eyesight, to spot such a sucker takes years of training and dedication. 1500, fcuk, yibbida yibbida, fcuk me, what do you think that taxi driver was doing on the way home, I picture him dancing around his taxi doing that little shimmy jig and repeatedly holding up and kissing his new found wealth. Then taking the freeway back to the airport to look for his brother.
