This is a horse that's already been flogged to death but I thought i'd add my 2 cents anyways.
In the long run these girls bear more scars than you can imagine. I know one personally as a friend and she has revealed quite a bit about the life. Most of them live rather patheticly from a western point of a view. They juggle sponsors, f*** for money, and sometimes go out for a night on the town with their friends to watch movies, buy worthless shit, and live vicariously through their newfound temporary wealth. It's only during that brief period that they are able to wash away the knee deep shit they are wading through the other days of the week.
Even if they are all smiles during that time most of them probably aren't happy. At least not happy in the same sense that most of us can be with our relatively normal lives. Most won't be happy until they are taken out of the p4p scene. Let's not kid ourselves, the p4p stigma is VERY serious in Thai society. She told me verbatim that some of her relatives would literally disown her if they found out what she did. These are the same relatives who probably pay the rent, car, and buy new clothes due to her contributions. I'm sure there are plenty of families who know what their daughter is doing but self delusion is a skill mastered by thais. They will convince themselves that their daughter really does have a rich boyfriend taking care of her while she goes through uni. Some parents can even accept it as long as noone else knows.
She once told me recently that she remembered what she was like prior to doing this "work." She was able to have a real boyfriend and be happy with her life. In her words, she said that her smile towards people were genuine then. These days she definitely has been hardened by what she does. I met her during her early MP days and you could chart the sequence of changes over the months from when she quit the MP and the present day where she is juggling sponsors. It's no longer about f***ing for money anymore, it's about deceiving people to get as much money as possible. For any person with a conscious or a shred of morality this lifestyle will take its toll. Some girls can do it without a second thought but they are so far gone that they will probably never be a decent human being ever again.
I don't believe all thai girls are "whores" either. That is a lazy cop out for guys who have never really dated normal girls in Thailand before and aren't really in tune with the culture. The normal girls I have met know full well what the stigma is in Thailand, they aren't stupid. They see the tourists coming to the country for short holidays and they know about the rumors associated with peers who have "turned" to make ends meet.
