I hope you all got a good laugh out of my situation. Didn't read all the posts about taxi stands and what not, like I said before "It's a learning experience". I did get a good deal for a private owned taxi service run by the lady that owns the internet cafe that I'm sitting in right now. 1000 baht to PTY. Made sure I got a recipt, and she threw in her business card for free. Off to Bamboo beer bar @ 1900hrs. if ne1 wants to meet a sucker  lates.

i still don't understand the problem people have with Taxis in Thailand.
Singleman said it cost him 1000 to go from BKK to PTY.
whats that,90 minute journey?
in the UK I will pay that for an 8 minute journey of less than 3 miles.
wise up,prices are much so much cheaper in LOS.
don't moan about the odd 100 Baht,it's not worth it unless you are a real CC.

nokna, I think you need to read this thread properly.
Singleman is complaining about the fact he paid 1300bht airport to Sukhumvit soi4. He is happy he got 1000bht deal from bkk to Pty!

Gotcha.
I'd guess the usul way any insane increase is justified - "let's see how many folks bite, thinking it's a great deal"
At 5000 Baht, they only need to offer 1/3 the service, and make the same revenue... and if they make more, so much the better.
From what I have been reading hereabouts, the Thais seem to favor raising prices when business is low. On the other hand, we tend to avoid businesses that raise their prices...
