Hi Turist,

To get a feeling about the cost of living in thailand, go to the pattaya page of this forum; the first topic (at this moment) is (what else could it be but ...) "Newbie Question ..." In this topic I broke down the daily cost for an average lowbudget (me!) tourist. IN PATTAYA!!!!!!! Everything is a bit cheaper over there especialy the girls.
It comes down to about 100 euro a day to have it all. In Bangkok this will be doable but it will not be easy.
So double your budget.

It comes down to the fact that you want to live the life of a tourist on the budget of a hippy. So something has to go, the girls (most of them), 2-3 weeks instead of 4, or the budget.
That Greg (I think) can live with less over there, is because he knows it all, thais cann't f_ck him, and he probably lets the girls go for a month. You on the other hand don't know anything (from own experience that is).
Fact is that thais are masters at thievery. They don't steal in the legal sence that you know. You can put your suitcase in the middle of Sukhumvitroad in the morning and collect it in the evening. No, they steal in a very legal way; you have to GIVE it to them. They always ask higher prices and some you know (from here) and some you don't. And even knowing the price does not mean you will get it, they have time on their side, you don't. And many times they steal from you by giving you the wrong (more expencive) information/service. And that's because they (and you) are stupid, not because they want to harm you.
Bargirls have made this in to an art. For them you are a walking piggybank. And nothing you will say or do will change that. So in their eyes you are a millionair until proven a total bastard. Nothing in between.

And even independent girls in bangkok go seldom below 1500 B for LT. This is my little experience - maybe I like the wrong girls, or go at the wrong time to the wrong places.
An other point is that bangkok is a very large city (more citizens than Denmark) so you have to account for travelcosts. 250 B a day per person is not much if you are a tourist.

At Kaosan road you can sleep for 59 B. The only drawback is that your room has no walls at all. And you have to share your room with 50 hippies, 5000 roaches, 4 dogs, 6 snakes and a few dozen lizards. Up to you! As the girls say.

And talking about sharing, why not share your room with your friend. It saves some real money and I know from experience that it makes your holiday an interactive one. A lot of fun can be had this way, if you are not a shy person.

On your budget you could just make it if you only do ST all the time. But in my opinion what's the point of that. I can do ST in a 100 different places in my city. So why bother taking an expencive planeride across the world.

So you can forget about the 750 B LT for a girl. Double that budget, or take halve of the planned girls. Because they will suck you dry (in more than one way).

And about food, I think you can multiply your budget by 5. Because eating from roadside stalls is maybe what the thais do (and you in Denmark) but if you have seen them I think 90% of us white people would not eat there if you put a flamethrower on a stall to kill the germs. So if you don't eat pussy, why should I expect you to eat roaches.

And on the subject of eating. There are 50 - 100 million HIV infected people worldwide, but I think there was only 1 case known who got it oraly.

I hope I'm not to much of a partypooper on your plans. But I would hate it, that you have to live on 50 B the last 2 weeks of your trip. So read my other post and enjoy your first time, just as I did. I had all the knowledge of the internet in my head, but I still knew nothing.

Turist,

If you come to LOS thinking you know everything from reading this forum and doing some research on the internet you will be wihtout money in a week.

If you want a good budgeted trip take one of the guys from this forum everyday for a guide. The thais will trick you out of your money faster than you can "where did it go."

You have too much of an "I know everything" attitude. You will be made a fool of at least once per hour on your first trip here. I have been here for 2 years strait, living and working. I can speak the language pretty well, but I am still made a fool of sometimes. Remember we will never know as much as the Thais, therefore never thing you know it all.

I wish you the best of luck, but fear that you will be taken advantage of becasue of your pride. I have been there and done that. You are like me I think, we never learn unless we experience it ourselves. Hard way to learn a lesson, and in LOS it can be an expensive one also.

Good Luck!

Great and very useful post Blattsucker!
And you are totaly right about every thing regarding my budget, I fear!

I'm sry for leaving the impression that I know it all ( how do you conclude that ) because I defently know nothing about this culture, way of life, language etc.
My pride.... Do I have such a thing!

And the thing you all are talking about about being ripped of by thai's is a bit hard to understand for me, sitting on the other site of the world. If I negotiate the prise, how long, what action included and how many times, etc then how can I get cheated!
Forget about standing your ground at the price of 750, multiply it you all say, and in the next line you all then say that I will be taken advantage of! This I have a hard time understanding.

And the thing about being made a fool, hell then let them think I am a fool. But again, for where I am right now I don't understand why they would mark me. I am not going to force anyone to talk with me, and I'm not telling them to sleep with me for 750, I'm offering it. It's a business for the girls, and I can't imagine them being that succesful if they constantly are looking for ways to make their klients feel like fools. But as said, I don't know anything about BKK, You do, and I ask you, and I learn from it, and Kryptonite is painting an odd biografi of me, lol maybe I do have some pride after all, I'm sorry though that they still laugh at you!, I hope thai's stop being mean to you some day!

(sry, I got a bit piss offed by your profile on me, but I'm feeling much better now thank you)

I still think there is a lot of good advice here.  It has helped me a lot.  Actually, having been to BKK and having "researched" much of it myself (at the cost of many many hours) the advice given here is right on and will save you tons of hours and many bahts.  One more thing, it is very easy to ride the buses in BKK without speaking a word of Thai.  I just get on and give them a 10 baht coin.  They will hand you change and a very small slip of paper.  You should keep this little slip.  I have been asked for it by some offical looking dude who got on at a bus stop.  Everyone was showing theirs, so I just did as they did.  Not a word was spoken.

Hi Turist,

".........I can't imagine them being that succesful if they constantly are looking for ways to make their klients feel like fools." You say.

Well the point is they don't make you feel like a fool. Far from it, they make you feel like a king. Your a fool if you believe them. You have to know that in the thai language the word 'NO' does not exist. On every question you ask they will answer with yes. You can not imagine that by living in Denmark, where your experience is that nobody knows the word 'YES'.

They have several reasons for saying YES. First and formost; saying NO could mean you will be offended and there by they lose face. And that is the last thing a thai will do. Give him a choice and let him choose between the death of his entire family and saving his face; and the family goes out the window.
Secondly you ask your question in a foreign language to them. Your english maybe shit (your spelling atleast), but you are Shakespear compared to a regular thai. They don't understand you half of the time (not even counting that you may speak it like you write it). Still they all speak almost fluently english, or so it seems. If you don't understand something, you go around asking (your here; aint you?? ) you think that is normal. A thai on the other hand will never say he did not understand you. He will lose face then, because you might think he is stupid. So he says YES.

The first thing that happend to me when I left the plane is a funny story for everybody, but a highly informative one for you. I will copy paste 2 stories from a forum far, far away. It answers a guys questions about how to get to Pattaya from the airport. So read it, laugh yourself silly, and then think this could happen to me also. Every minute of every day your in thailand. Enjoy!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, the rate is 1500 B for a regular taxi. If you go with an illegal taxi (one that has no contract to be on the aiportgrounds) you pay 1000 or 1200 for the tollway. Last year I took such a taxi and it was fun. We (my friend and I) were aproached by a vehicle that was already demolished by Laurel & Hardy in a silentmovie. And he would bring us for 1000 B. Next thing we know, we are getting kidnapped to a vacant lot next to the airport, under the excuse he needs some cigs and a drink for the long drive.
He gets his stuff and orders us to take our things out of the car. Some eager hands are already helping with the suitcases. We start to say our prayers (we're not religious, but this was a good time to start, as there was probably no second chance) and lo and behold, we were guided to a bigger and better car, with airco and a new driver.
The driver drove like a maniac (don't they all??) and brought us to our hotel in Pattaya.
But now I know my way in this country I would recommend the bus. For 300 B. you get a good bus from the airport to Pattaya. And if you have to be in town you take a taxi for about 300 B in to BK and then go to Ekamai station and take the bus for 90 B.
The taxi's from the Pattaya busstation ask a standard 100 B. to bring you to your destination (highly overpriced!) and your not alone for this money, you share with 10 to 20 people.
Being dutch the bit more bother is worth the price difference, which amounts to the price of a girl for a night. And I spend my money rather on a pretty face than on a buttugly taxidriver.

Hope this answers your question (probable more than you hoped for )

------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is an other story worth mentioning. When you come thru customs, you are going left to get to the taxi/tourguide meeting place. But I think you have to go right in to an other part of the building and there is the ticket office for the busses. (Check this with the information desk.) On our first trip we wanted to go by bus to Pattaya. I recollect (don't trust someone who has not slept the night before and just saw 3 inflight movies and a documentary or 2) it is almost at the end of the arrivalbuilding.
So we buy 2 tickets (300 B a piece) from this woman and ask her where the bus stops. She points to the door next to her booth and says it stops there. We go out and as spoiled westerners we are looking for a busstop. We cann't find one so we wander to the road a 100 yards further on (with luggage and in a boiling heat ofcourse).
On the road we see a busstop, so we wait there. The first bus that comes looks like it survived 2 WorldWars and has only thai lingo written on it. And it doesn't stop to take passengers in, you have to jump on. Oh well, it is almost 9 AM so the next one should be ours. This bus looks even worse. I jump on with 2 cases leaving my (mistrustfull) friend at the busstop. I ask the the woman that checks the tickets if this is the bus to Pattaya. Yes she says. So I shout to my friend to get on the moving bus and he does. Than a thai passenger (the only kind on the bus, which is a bad sign) tells me this bus goes into town not to Pattaya. Great!
We jump of a still moving bus and are now on the other side of the arrivalbuilding. We go back to the building and there I see a nice bus with Pattaya on it driving by.
And there is where we saw (or did he see us) the taxi from my previous post.
The moral of this story (and the answer to your question) is that the bus stops infront of the door next to the ticketbooth. So don't go looking for things, like signs, that are not there. Don't ask questions to people that you have not established as speakers of a known lingo. This is Thailand, not farangland. Go with the flow. This wise lesson and how the publictransport works in Thailand costs us 600 B. for the bus and 1200 B for the taxi.

In case anybody wants to know; I wrote these on the VipAdultTravel forum some moths ago.

JackRabbit present...

"How can I get cheated , if I negotiate everything ?"

Answer: Easily, the girl just says "Yes , three times, whole night , we do anything " and You make a deal.

In the hotelroom she breaks agreement after one pop and demands the money anyway.
If You do not pay , trouble.

Thx for teaching me about the ""yes" and no "no" policy"!! And yes, I spell very badly as said soo many times before (by me). But please; I don't "speak it like I write it", lol, - believe it or not, But I understand where your concern is coming from!!
- Nice start on your fist vacation in Thailand!

JackRabbit, I hope that this only happens when the girl who leave with me is thinking that we agreed on one thing while I'm thinking that we agreed on something else! - and not deliberately attempting to "cheat me"!!

When I'm in Thailand, I keep my money, ATM and credit cards and my passport in the hotel security box. I make a copy of my passport face page and carry this with me. I only carry my ATM card when I'm going to get a couple of days cash. GET A BUSINESS CARD from the hotel with the address written in thai. Makes it alot easier to get back at night by cab.
Give the girl the money on the way out of the hotel in the morning. You should have no problems. I've been to LOS 11 times and never had a problem with getting ripped off by the girls. I have had my credit card cloneded and charged 12K USD but I didn't have to pay for it. I arrive in Pattaya 19 February and if you want to hook up let me know and I'll show you around.
