learning to read pasathai is a very good idea. I learned how about 7 years ago, but being pretty f_cking lazy, have not studied much since then and forgot quite a bit, esp the less commonly used letters ..
However, I can still figure out from a street sign where the hell I am and that is helpful..
Also, if I am having trouble pronouncing or learning a word, I have the girl put it in thai (so I can read it, thank you) and that helps me a lot ..
Reading handwritten pasathai is a challenge as they get as sloppy as we do writing english .. make it very hard to figure out

Yeah, Big Bill lives about 25 miles from me (heavily-fortified compound), and I know people who work in the anti-piracy department. Friends of mine at Micro&Soft can legally purchase the software at about 15% of retail prices and offer to do so for me, but even then I think that the software is a bit pricey - especially when I value stability above all other software qualities. Monopolies occupy, however, a powerfully convincing position. The Thais have won "The Price Is Right", I gather, and there is balance in The Force...

Oaktoad, your post cracked me up, as I hope that I can suspend my "PFL" tendencies long enough to get even a toe-hold on the written language... Sloppily-written characters could introduce me to a whole new realm of mental spasticity... but I trust that the Thais will laugh with me in my efforts!

I don't recommend the stick on letters as they wear too fast. (Used to have them on a notebook. Ended up just keeping a fullsize keyboard and monitor at home and another pair at the office and using docking station. Now I work at home and as Inspector Clouseau would say, the problem is sol-ved.
Thai keyboard I can get for like $5 NIB. Mailing to USA won't be much more and I am sure I can get a CD with Windows Thai Edition 2000 or XP (I assume you do not want 98 (ugh!) or ME) for you for <$5 if not free (I do have a CD burner...) I DO have XP sitting around here, but do not use it as it is a memory hog, and my hardware is too old (128 Mb RAM is "not enough"...)
So I can burn XP, and I can get a 2000 install disk and burn that too.

BTW, one nice feature of the Thai-English Software-Dictionary (picked up at Asia Books, BKK), is that it talks. When I reach a language impass while talking with my TG on the phone (usually because my pronunciation sounds like a water buffalo wheezing its last), I hold the phone to the speaker of my laptop and have her listen. Works about 90% of the time, and has been a great help to us.

If you would like to trade a Thai keyboard and a Windows 2000/XP disk for some additional RAM for your computer, I'd be happy to. I have 32, 64, and 128MB sticks (I build/upgrade computers for friends in my free time), and if you let me know the make and model of your computer, I could find out which type and how much RAM it can utilize.
For that matter, if anyone in Thailand needs some computer hardware best obtained in the US, let me know.

Yeah, I was surprised myself, given the fact that I had to turn the speakers up almost to the point of distortion for her to hear it over the telephone. When I took the laptop to BKK, she understood the voice 100% of the time. BTW, it is a female speaker on the CD.
